This one I havent cleaned. I wiped it a bit to see what the deposit was - looks to be sandy.

This is a Constantine I coin - CONSTANTINVS MAX AVG - GLORIA EXERCITVS. Mint mark is TRS (!).

HEres Helveticas RIC list entry:
Constantine I CONSTANTI-NVS MAX AVG ROSDC GLOR-IA EXERC-ITVS TRS Trier RIC VII Trier 518 r5 Standards: no drapery or little drapery with O, 3-8 badges, often very thin shafts with pointed tops instead of banners 330-335 AD yes

Yeah - an R5! Well, R4 now. With a white desert patina? Pretty cool. Feel free to dispute the ID. Its definitely TRS as the mint mark though.

I couldnt get the rich contrast in the photo - white patina against a jet black patina. Pretty nice.

This is one I'm thinking of selling on for funds to buy more uncleaned lots - what do you guys reckon its worth? And PM me if you're interested

I received it in a lot at christmas like this and I intend to not touch it! Its perfect as it is and trying to improve it would be asking for trouble.

Plus, its worth more like this (apparently). People love desert patinas and this is the first white one I've found.

Not bad - I think it may have something to the right of TRS though, those 3 letters seem to lie slightly to the left, maybe a dot

Remember the RIC rarity figures are not a reflection of the entire population of coins just what was found in a selection of well known collections at the time. Therefore even if a coin is classed as unique (R5), hundreds, even thousands of examples can exist or be found and the number remains R5.

Bobby - I too was sceptical, looking for the dot, but on review of other specimens with the TRS dot mintmark it was clear that the dot would be quite large and is usually prominently positioned and wouldve been on flan for this example.

And the rarity thing is true - but I love being able to write EXTREMELY RARE on something!

EDIT: Spelling

I've even seen a couple of coins listed as C, or common. And yet they are uncommon to scarce.

Ben you're right it is a nice coin. In the last year or so you have really found your niche. These late Roman coins often found in the plenty-rares slip by most but not Ben.

nice one ben!

the patina is nice and even, so I wouldn't touch it either as long as it wasn't loose.
