Persia, The Sassanid Kingdom Khusro II The Great King Shah of Persia (590-628 AD) Minted during the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad. AR 31.5mm x 0.8mm Drachm (4.13g) Obverse: Portrait of the King Khusro II wearing great hat. 3 moons and stars in concentric rings. Reverse: Zoroastrian Fire temple altar with 2 attendants. Concentrics rings, 4 moons and stars. By this time Rome existed in the east, Parthia had fallen to the Sassanid Dynasty and Zoroastrianism was the major religion of the civilized east. In 625 The Prophet Muhammad was dictating the Koran. This coin is an exceptional shape for its type with an amazingly good reverse. One can clearly see the Altar! These coins, are often listed by major auction houses and catalogs along side ancient coins. The have a unique style very different from previous styles of coins. The have a very large, thin planchet stuck in fine silver. A truly magnificent coin shining through, a time when darkness, illertasy,death and barbarism where the norm. The mighty Persian Empire again flourished and kept the comparatively weak Byzantine rulers from expanding deep in to the East. The Sassanids eventually fell to Muslim rule ushering in a new age. This particular coin and this ruler represent truly transitional coinage, in a time when the very fabric of the civilization is up for grabs. from my smackdown entry....  |

whovala who of what? I don't think so...but I'm not 100% certain of this one myself. I THINK it is 1st century indo-parthian...a bit later than the dates you gave AN...but not much.

Agreed, Chris not the same coin. I can't pin it down, most of the Indo-Parthian has left facing busts. Hum..The reverse looks like it has Kharoshthi on it, this will take time..
