realeswatcher - I can agree with what you say. Including the ink removal - it is like dirt. But if you remove a dirt spot you never know what is under the dirt. Dirt and ink protect the surface from reacting with atmospheric sulphur dioxide. Acetone alone would have removed the ink and in doing so would reveal the original surfaces under the ink and would have left the toning very uneven.
It is the removal of the natural toning that I object to. That is cleaning no matter how well done. That is why I dislike NCS material. It is all cleaned.
I agree the final product looks over dipped. I can never understand how any experienced grader can miss that. This coin should never have been graded MS.
However, even if everyone agreed removing the toning was ok, removing toning and ink does not remove wear. The coin had wear as you agree and so it still has wear. I would agree with AU58.
I also agree the buyers SHOULD look past the slab but they simply do not - especially the novice bidders of
ebay. They are not sophisticated nor professional and they rely on the reputation of the grading company far too much.
But is reliance on a grading companies opinion a flaw for which the innocent but naive bidder should lose money?
Those naive bidders are the people the
ebay Community Watch Group is set up to protect and why if there is clear proof of an old "details" graded coin being posted with no warning that the auction is terminated and sanctions are implemented against the seller.
Of course the chances of this happening in this case are infinitesimal. The coin is far too common and too many examples have been graded.
