Were these only issued as proofs, or were the S mint issues also for circulation? I'm wondering because while at the bank today, I noticed two of these in the teller's box and after getting them home, noticed one was a 1980-S.

There were 20.4 million non-proof S-mint SBAs issued in 1980, vs. 3.5 million 1980-S proofs.

1979-S and 1980-S were available as business strikes while the 1981-S was only available in Mint Sets. Proofs were also minted for those three years but the 1999 proof was minted at Philly.

Ah, thanks. It's the first time I've had an S-mint one, so I wasn't sure if it was a circulation piece or a worn proof. Most likely the former.

A proof will still look like a proof until it's worn below "VF" usually.

I once found a '68-S quarter in only VG that was still obviously a proof.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

And the 99 proof coins came separate in their own plastic case.
