Is there any interest in Wood Grained Coins? I have seen mention here and there; but rarely paid much attention.

Lately I have been sorting through bags of Pennies. I have gone through 60,000 so far. As I was sorting I pulled any woodgrained coin where the graining was well defined. Some are even spectacular.

My question is; are these worth pulling for anything other than my own enjoyment. I am a dealer as well as a collector. Do they bring any premium in higher grades? I've looked at ebay and the results are few and far between.

Thanks!

Personally, I really like the wood-grain effect on coins. It is caused by the alloys not being thoroughly mixed when the planchets were made.

As far as whether it brings an increased premium, I think it's like toning. Some people love it, some don't.

It cant hurt to set the spectacular examples asside special in your storefront/table, someone might bite at a sligtly higher price.

There are MANY woody fans...including me. I would pay a premium for what I call a "red wood", i.e. a red, mint state woody. Others highly depend on how they look as woodgraining has a lot of variety.
