Hello kuh_85.. It almost looks like Struck Through Grease but...not sure...hard to tell sometimes showing the whole coin leads to a clearer picture of what's going on (no pun intended)  ..nice closeup though. Hopefully someone can pass along their expertise. |

That's a nice shape coin...does look like a bit of doubling going on with the hair line... that is a neat find...hope someone with more experience with what that spot might be can help out.

That area behind the hair looks like 'waves out upon the ocean'*, as photographed from high altitude.
I would think that may have been caused by a small droplet of oil, between die and planchet.

I don't think it's a strike through. This area shows that effect on more than one date and at different intensity. I suspect it's a stress area that bends/ripples slightly the surface of the die, resulting in a "sun ray" effect radiating, as can be seen on many other denominations. Nickel 50 cents often present that effect.

I did think of that as I have a couple of 'Glowing' examples (1938 & 1997) but this didn't seem to have the strong, radial line effect that those have.

I do not know the cause but I have seen the same thing on many different pure nickels.
