I am curious about some facts and figures , does anyone know who mints the Falklands islands coins ? Has anyone ever found them in their change in the past few years ?

I find them occasionally. Always in pretty good condition - I reckon they are released from split mint sets or from jars of pennies people have. Never seen a toned falklands penny.

I've found them all except the 50p in change over this past 20 years or so, but none in this last 6 or 7 for some reason. The £1 was very worn.

No - they are just in a drawer. I have over 7,000 different coins - these would be wayyyyy down the pecking order for display purposes. Actually I don't "display" anything - except two framed sets of notgeld with a medieval theme which work very well in my hallway :)

RE Who Mint FI coins Royal Mint

Why so many in UK

Soldiers bring them back plus tourists

I had a shop not far about 2 miles from a Local Army barracks in UK, in the 80s when the solders came home from Falklands war I was over loaded with coins and notes most of the coins I mixed in with UK coins and banked.

Interesting stuff indeed, I wish I could find one of these coins. Speaking of which what happens to the coins if the bank "discovers" them ?

Re What happens if bank discovers them

do really think they open up those plastic bank bags they just get dished out to the next customer who requests change.

been Isle of Man few times there own coins circulate along side mainland UK coin / notes but when you land back home nobody wants IOM coins
same as Jersey Guernsey etc.. all have same value Sterling Face

Since I live in Liverpool and the ferry runs between IOM and Liverpool theres loads of IOM coins in your change, mostly I find 5p's and 1 pound coins

yours

Michael

A little off topic When I opened a Business account in early 1980's and I explained to the bank manager what business I was running his eyes just opened up,"just wait here he said" popped out off his office then came back with loads of old green and blue pound notes asking if these are of any value, well from that day on for 9 years me and him done many deals, of cause some people where cashing in out of date currency for face and he was selling it to me and putting the face value in cash draw keeping any profit for himself.Great days javascript:insertsmilie('')

I have an interesting Sovereign from the 1970's. it has a sheep on it. Low mintage and just a little more gold content.
