Yes Meiji year 8 which is 1875. Great coin. They run close to $100 each over here in that condition.

OK, just want to know. In the year 1876 how can Japan put 416 ONE YEN 900 what is that mean?

After looking at some of my reference books here. That year 1 yen coin runs about $650 in that condition. 1 yen was its monetary value, the 900 refers to the silver content and the 416 is a reference to the grain (not exactly sure what that means). It had a minatge of only 139,323 that year. This is the most valuable of the New Type 1 Yen Large Size Coins.

I should also mention that these coins are heavily counterfeited though, at the very least you should check it with a magnet, if it sticks its certainly a fake. If you have access to a scale it should also weigh 26.96 grams and have a diameter of 38.6mm. If you could include some close up shots of the 1 in the 416 I could also help pin down the variation within that year for you. Hope this helps some.

mjjudd - how can you not tell that it's a counterfeit especially if you know it's a rather scarce year?

I can guarantee that it's a counterfeit otherwise I'll eat my shorts. Details are mushy, edge is too thick and lastly seems more like a cast instead of showing features of a struck coin.

gxseries - It is a little bit hard to explain but also easy to say. It's an old japan coin, it was very rusty when I found it so I brush it with a tooth paste, silly me. I also measure the diameter is 38 mm

It sure does looked like cast copy, the rim are way too wide and thick, details are mushy and flat, surface porous.

Take a look at this link. Make close comparisons and decide for yourself. I tend to agree with both gxseries and macmercury.

No problem, it is fake. The rim looks thicker than it should be. The enlarged picture tell it is a cast. Further evidence is the weight of this coin is below standard for a significant amount.

Fake - what mjjudd was talking about is the style of the numeral 1 in 416.
In 1875 they switched from a 1 with a downwards serif to I (looks like the letter I with serifs, or the letter H rotated 90 degrees)
The style of the 1 in your photo was not used until 1887...
