Don't know if this has been asked before but...

If there were no laws or fences or rules or private property in all of the world, where would you MD and what would you look for?

I would love to metal detect at one of the major civil war sites such as Gettysburg. There is no telling what you could find at a site like that.

Old Jerusalem. Or Athens, or Antioch, or Alexandria. The big, ancient cities where people still live, so they were spared the systematic looting of the past few centuries. It won't be too much longer before the only untouched, unlooted archaeology is the stuff sitting under people's houses.

Of course, using or even owning a metal detector is either illegal or strictly controlled in Israel, Greece, Turkey and Egypt. So it's a purely hypothetical scenario.

I would like to detect the US National Parks, such as Yosemite and Yellowstone. No doubt there would be silver coin and jewelry galore.

I would detect a few sites:

Athens, Rome, WWI sites, Civil War sites. Would be fun but a dream.

I would like to detect near the corner of Washington and Summer St on the Hull homestead, the site of the mint in Boston. A Macy's sits on top of it now.

Think big - Central Rome, the vatican, an anglo saxon castle (any), Giza plateau and perhaps somewhere different like the pit full of the terracotta warriors.

Wherever there's a jar full of gold or silver.

Okay, in context I'm probably not allowed to do that. I'd check out all those Eastern European and Middle Eastern countries you're not allowed to detect in, starting with the absolute oldest cities.

The Wash (wide estuary on the east coast of England). Tides go out for miles there, which has been taken advantage of for centuries by travelers who can cut many miles off a journey by crossing the sands at low tide, if you time it right. One who didn't time it right was King John, traveling with his great royal entourage in 1216. They had to leave the heavy wagons and flee for the shore when the tide came rushing back. When they went back at the next low tide, many wagons were gone without trace.

Including the one containing the Crown Jewels of England.

Gettysburg, where the 16th Maine fought. My great grandfather and his brother were captured by the rebs there, They later escaped from Libby Prison and returned to what was left of the 16th.
