I have been looking to buy a 1916 D Mercury dime. Because of the price ranges on them I am probably looking at a G-4 or G-6. Is it possible to find one in the $700 to $800 dollar range? I know there are a lot of fakes out there so I would like one that is certified. Does anyone have any opinions on this? *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. *** |

Theres a couple on ebay in the 800-900 dollar range for those grades right now. If you check the completed listings though quite a few have sold for under 800 dollars and 2 ANACS and 1 IGC one actually sold under 700 so you can find it if your patient and keep a good eye on them. If you dont want to wait theres also a lot of AG3 ones on ebay in the 400-550 dollar range |

You should really try to find a coin show. At many of the ones I go to I see that 16D Merc all the time. Some raw, some in slabs. Usually if a raw one is for sale I too would worry since it is one of the most couterfeited coins on Earth. I see them at coin shows for anywhere from $450 to $10,000. That Miller's Mint catalog has about 6 of them shown. A G-4 is listed as $750.They also show a AU-55 for $7,950. Web sites are all over the place so ebay is far from the only place for coins. |

I agree with just carl with going to coin shows if one is near your area, and I would buy one in TPG slab, you can see it in hand and maybe able to negotiate a price and save a few dollars. |

These coins are not as hard to get as you would think. I see AG examples going for really cheap all the time. I had an ICG slabbed F-12 (damaged) that I couldn't get 1000 for. Decided just to keep it. It had a big hit, but the hit wasn't date,mm, or a main device....so with the details that high, I really think it deserved at least 1000. Guess not. I rarely see 16-D sell for book value or higher.

You really just going to need to hunt. ANACS ones might sell for a little bit less, but not much.

AAHHHHHHhhh the good old days. Way, way back when I was a kid, there was a coin store about two blocks from where I lived. One day in the window there was a tray, might have been a saucer, full of 1916D Mercury dimes. Sign there said $1.50 each. Still don't remember where as a kid I ever got enough to buy those but I did end up with all 10 of them. Still have them. All were in decent shape but then again, back then no one saved coins that I knew of.  The best one of them is in my set #1 above Edited by just carl

I am jealous of your collection 'just carl'. I don't ever think I can get 10 1916-D for a buck fifty each in any condition anywhere in the future. LOL!

I've decided that I'm going to get my 1916D Merc at the best price. I'm looking for a time machine on ebay to go back to Denver in 1916 and get a few of rolls. This works at two different levels... first, I'm getting pristine rare coins. Secondly, since I'm pulling a few hundred out of circulation, they will be more rare when I get back to 2013. My next trip will be to Philly, 1921 for a few '21 NMM Mercs. |
