Quote: As we can see there are not a few coins from the previous years (let's say 2007-2008) that became "winners" from "just another coin". Hmmm I think I could find some around the same mintage doing ok from 2008 $20 Fine Silver Coin - - " Crystal Raindrop (2008)mintage 10,000 $89.95 on ebay for $160 http://www.ebay.com/itm/2008-Canada...61388&_uhb=1Quote:The Royal Canadian Mint issues a 2008 $4 Dinosaur Collection - Triceratops 0.9999 silver Proof coin. The coin depicts a triceratops dinosaur skull, with selective brown finish to the design area, the 2nd coin in the Dinosaur Collection series. The design was created by Kerri Burnett. Weight 15.87 grams, diameter 34mm, mintage limit 20,000, issue price $39.95[quote] Selling on ebay for $150 or so. http://www.ebay.com/itm/2008-Canada...9bd7b&_uhb=1Chronology of Canadian Coins 2008 http://coinhistory.info/canada/can2008.htmI am sure there are more as I didn't look through the whole listings from 2008 just the first few months. Oh I just found the first of the series "2007 Canada $4 Fine Silver Coin - Parasaurolophus" whats interesting is that the mintage of the 4 coins is "20,000" The first is the same as the last but still sells for about $150 more , interesting. Going for $250 ish on ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/2007-Canada...eb120&_uhb=1The Royal Canadian Mint releases two 2008 $20 Crystal Snowflake coins, one with sapphire crystals, the other with amethyst crystals. Each coin is 0.9999 silver, contains seven Swarovski elements, weight 31.39 grams, 33mm diameter, mintage limit 7500 each. Price is $94 on ebay for $175 ish

Yes, Northencoins, agree for 100%
That was exactly the point, I just expressed myself not clear at all.
What I meant: Do not buy it only because it potential winner, because other coins could be winners too. Who knows...maybe Korean War Medal coin will get appreciation in next 2 years or other coin from this release.
My example of 2007-2008 coins just support my assumption, and you gave exact examples, when ordinary coins became winners.

Oh ok Silveroid lol I understand now... Also if it wasn't for ebay and "flippers" the mint wouldn't have half the sales that they have now IMO , I am sure ebay has increased the mints coin exposure by 50% if not more over the last 6 years or so.

here's a weird one for you - 1st issue of the Transportation Series, Mintage 15,000 The bluenose is regularly selling above $125 if not closer to $200. The other two, with the same mintage in 2000 don't do near as well. (incidentally, the only coin I ever purchased above 'issue price' as I need it to complete my set)
Add to that, in 2003, the 'Transportation Series' became 'selectively gold plated', yet never achieved the same status as the Bluenose despite reduced mintages closer to 11,000.
Back then, the Doves vs Pigeons was mostly on peoples personal likes and/or dislikes. If it didn't sell well, the ones that did sell became 'more rare' as fewer of the mintage was released. Currently, these 'sell-outs' do nothing for our collections. If the mint has a release of two coins of maximum 8,000 but only 1400 of 'a' get sold, or another coin 'b' sells out 8,000 completely:
coin a) will increase in value slowly, as it is realized how few are in existence, and how hard it is to come by. coin b) will have an initial 'fabricated' value due to the sell out, but will be realized how many are actually available, not everybody will be able to capitalize on it. (I always laugh at the 'reviews' on the mint web-site, as people describe a coin as 'rare' with mintages greater than 10,000!!)
Sell-outs, in my opinion are only good for short term gain. I collect for collections sake, I'll never pay more than issue (again), regardless how lucrative it appears to be after the initial sell-out.

Yes, exactly the point.
But, Dcadon, you said that you never pay more then issue price. I also want to be able to do it...but what to do, for real example, if I want to add "2010 The Sun" to my collection? There is impossible to find it even close to issue price.
In those cases, you just do not buy, and that's it?

Those in the Vancouver area can go to the Vancouver Mint Boutique on Granville Street to buy the July coins. They are all in stock, including the Dino, Banknote, and Duck coins.

Yup, missed that one too. We'll see if in a year or 10 that it isn't sold for more than bullion - after all, didn't 'The Sun' also have 5,000 or more produced? If so, and you and I don't have one in our collections... somebody is still sitting on a hoard of them. We'll see - sooner or later if what I was saying - will come to pass.

That interesting approach. I think, partially I will apply it...instead of trying to fill the holes in the collection as soon as possible and paying good premium.

It's even more interesting than that. The mintage of the first coins was 14,946 and the mintage for the 5th and last coin in the series was only 6,256 but the 1st coin sells for significantly more than issue. Incidentally, the expected mintage for the first coin was 20k and issue price was $39.95 while the expected mintage for the fifth coin was 13k and issue price was $49.95. So the mint lowered the mintage and increased the price on the 5th but that coin sold the least and has the lowest ROI. Common wisdom seems to be 1st in the series will be worth more because people are slow pick up on new coins and will 'need' the first on to complete their series. Yet in this case, the first coin sold more than any other in the series. Go figure.

Visited to my local PO, to see the July release coins. Without any surprise, most of them where there:
Ducks (silver and nickel) Banknote coin Korea War Devil Brigade GITD 3-rd Silver Dyno O Canada (different releases) Butterflies Dragonfly ...and more.
Well, was interesting to see many nice coins together. Need to say, that all of them looks way better "in hands".
But, I remember the limits and actually came to see Impressions (1oz) and Silver Dollar Korea War.
Impressions 1oz - probably the single coin that wasn't there , and it good for my wallet. But Korea War Silver Dollar - I like it very much. Unusual for our NCLT design (actually medal art work). It is the coin, that doesn't fit my theme, but from those, which I buy anyway: 2013 Arctic Expedition Silver Dollar 2010 Poppy Silver Dollar
So, I bought it.
