I haven't look carefully through the two sets I've received from the Mint.
However, they look good over all, under my naked eyes.

I like both coins very much.

Btw, I'm sorry to hear about Earle42's case. It seemed like a curse or something?

I haven't bought any, don't plan to. The mint is just way too greedy on markups for my taste. I'll just wait until the prices on the same products are reasonable on the secondary market.

Interesting...so you are waiting for the price of the set to be BELOW issue price?

Yep. I've been following the silver proof quarter rolls on ebay and they are getting close to spot, as compared to the ridiculous $6.25 the mint is charging. One seller you can check out is pacificcoinco and his feedback.

The west point set probably wont go to spot, but I can definitely see it eventually going lower than us mint prices.

Interesting...
I am good friends with the Chief of Staff at Westpoint (he collects glass insulators like I do). I was just visiting with him last Saturday. He told me I need to send the Westpoint mint a letter concerning the quality control. He said they are VERY concerned about this area.

He also told me that if I can get up there, he will get me a tour tour of the mint (no pics allowed though)!

I have to contact the CS department again though. It cost me 23.xx to send the 5 sets back (ea. time) since their instructions were to send them insured for the whole amount. On the first package they only credited me the 6.00 it costs them to ship (finally came through). On the second package they refunded me the full amount.

while your theory is interesting, I do not know of any eagle sold by the mint (collector version), going for less than issue price and do not ever see it happening

I am also skeptical about the theory of buying the Westpoint set below the initial price. There aren't any of the special issue ASE sets selling at or below the initial price. Some sellers may not be getting more than the initial price - but I have yet to see any listed below retail.

It is unlikely that any ASE set will ever go below issue price for a couple of reasons. Of the 4 sets issued so far, one (2011) was limited to 100,000 sets and those still sell for more than twice the $300 mint price. The other 4 sets (2006, 2012, 2013) were all sold to demand which in all three cases ended up at about 250,000 sets, which appears to be the true collector demand (with room for a healthy market to exist). The 2006 set sells for more than 3 times it's initial price but it had times where it was lower than that. The two newest sets are selling just above issue price but might see an increase as more and more sets reach collectors and the market thins somewhat. Even if the spot price of silver were to drop to the $1.30 or so that supported pre 1965 coinage these sets would not drop much below the issue prices. They are not bullion vehicles, they are collector coins that happen to be made of silver because it makes really nice coins and is relatively inexpensive. If you want to buy silver coins near spot, buy bullion ASEs when demand is low and you can get them for near the $2.00 over that the mint charges for them in bulk. The West Point set is probably the best value that the mint has given us in an ASE set. The coins are of exceptional quality and design and were sold at a small premium above the total cost of production. If you just want silver, buy silver shot. You can get .9999+ fine shot for $0.69 over spot when you buy it in 25 kilo bags. Then you can mint your own coins.

I could potentially see the raw sets going for a little under issue price if the market stays flooded with them. However I dont see it getting much under even with like 3 dollar silver they should still sell over over 100 dollars. I know some people think theyre just bullion because theyre ASEs but those people are in the minority. These and the Proofs and W mint marks are without a doubt numismatic coins that carry premiums in the market and have done so for years

I swear the mint's computer has me flagged as a hassling target!

I sent back in the last batch of 5 messed up sets, and decided (after it was out the door) I would risk it and have them send me just ONE set back and refund me for the other 4. in the back of my mind I was also thinking of doing this as a test to see if they could get it right this time.

So the day I shipped these out, I called CS and got Linda. After relating everything that has happened so far, I asked she to send me back just ONE set and refund the other four. After she said she had typed this message into my account, I again relayed to her that I wanted her to make sure this was done properly b/c of the problems I had been having.

Later that week I got an email saying they had refunded the 5 sets.

I called CS and got Linda again (I was going to ask for her anyway). She remembered I had asked her TWICE to make sure a set got shipped out to me and that she was to refund me for four of them. She sounded surprised I was refunded for all of them. She checked the computer, and sure enough, her note was there, but the record said they simply refunded all 5.

I told her, nicely, I was not surprised. Test failed!

She apologized profusely for the trouble I keep having with their system.

THEN I had to tell her I was glad I had received 23.60 refund for shipping on the 2nd time I sent 5 sets back, but the 1st time I was only refunded 6.00. to my account and asked her to correct this please.

She asked if I had FAXed in the initial shipping cost receipt with a note asking for a refund. I told her my wife said she did this twice.

Linda looked up in the computer and said the records say they never got the twice-FAXed-receipt/request (although our FAX copies say they were received).

Another surprise came up when she did a bit more digging on the 6.00 refund. She found out the 6.00 they refunded me was from SOMEONE else's order and not mine!

I told her that really, I was having fun with this overall despite temporary frustrations. I explained to her that I am a rare individual who has all the time in the world, so I can afford to spend 3-4 hours on a phone to get things fixed and it really does not bug me b/c I just sit at the computer and have fun with other things while on the phone with them.

Yesterday I got an email saying they refunded my 23.60 for the first package.

So case closed - or, at least I hope their computer sees it as this way

I needed some extra $ to buy a good pistol anyway

Some PCGS 69s ended at $135 tonight. I was about 1 second to late to bid.

I ordered 4 sets and the mint messed up and shorted me 1 set. Looks like they'll credit my CC. I'm still upset!

carmykle: You can do better and buy a few graded set (some of the big dealers are having big discount for PF70 coins) a PF70 set can be had for around $250 or less (cheaper than the $280 I was paying for when they first released them).
