My daughter found a 2005 Oregon State Quarter proof ("S" mint mark) in change yesterday. This is the first proof I've seen in change. Have you ever found a proof coin in change? If so what was it? Edited by collectorplay

Not sure. I found a Brunel design £2 coin that has the Queen's portrait and reverse frosted. However I believe some of the specimen sets had frosting, so it may not be a proof after all.  Example from Tony Clayton's site. |

Yes .. but I don't roll hunt, so for me it is not common.
But .. I have dumped hundreds of proof coins over the years.
Some to the banks .. others I just spend.

I have found about 5 Australian impaired proof coins in circulation, over the years, including a colourised dollar.
All in standard metals.

Found 20 proof Kennedy halves in four rolls I got from a bank. Looked like someone cashed grandpa's collection in. Also found a 59D Lincoln proof and 46 Lincoln impaired proof in circulation. Actually found the 59D today. |

I've found a proof Australian $2. It was impaired so I didn't even realise - I just thought it was a nice uncirculated coin that had been rubbed on concrete.

I often get half dollar proofs when roll searching with my eldest. We have a small stack of them somewhere in her collection box.

The one and only time I have ever found a proof wasn't even in my change, it was roll searching Penny's and was from 1983.

Yeah, I get them fairly often at work. I've been a cashier for 10 months and have gotten 12 of them.
1 cent, 1974
1 nickel, 1976
2 dimes, clad 1980 and silver 2005
7 quarters, all clad, 1 bicentenial and 6 states
1 sac, 2002

Recently found a 1986 Libertad proof (in mint capsule+case) in the LCS generic silver tub for $2 over spot. That's a $50-ish coin that I paid >$25 for.
That's the bullion stacker's equivalent of finding a proof in pocket change. Plus--mine hadn't picked up any flaws from having been in circulation.
