I have my "old" Three Cent Silver (1861 NGC AU55) listed in " Buy It Now", but I have this little guy in "Lay-A-Way" until next payday and wanted to see what the CCF Members think that PCGS had to say about it. Thank you for your interest!  (sellers images)  Edited by oih82w8

Ok, I'll fall on the sword FIRST. AU-58, perhaps MS. Stunning and gorgeous whatever the grade. With your username, HOW are you able to do layaway and have to wait.......:-)

Obverse is ridiculous. Reverse has a couple hits in eye-obvious locations. MS63; NGC would have called it 64.

Beautiful! I have to go with 64 on this one. There may be a few hits on the reverse, but being as small of a coin as it is I dont think it would affect the eye appeal unless you have under a scope. I love the strong luster on the devices!

You guys were all over this one. I LOVE the detail on the obverse! I just wish the reverse had the vertical detail in the Roman Numeral III. However, there is a twist to this coin;  How about a 180 degree rotation (medal alignment)! I was just looking at another thread about Medal Alignment coins and I had posted a PCGS image of an 1861 AU55 3CS wishing that I could have one...good things do come to those who...(gasp) wait. Wow! What a beautiful coin! It sure has my (raw) AU 50 beat by a long shot! what a beauty! On a side note, I'm VERY glad I read your post, as my AU is also a 1861.. And it's the only silver Three Cent I have. I thought these were all purposely made with a "metal alignment", as mine is the same as yours, misaligned 180 degrees.. If I face the obverse towards me and flip it (up to down) the reverse is upside down.. If I flip it from the obverse to the side (right to left) it lines up perfectly.. So I'd have to assume its misaligned 180 degrees! Thank you so much, I would have never known this had you not said something! I though they were all like this! I'm not trying to steal your thread, and my coin is nothing compared to yours.. But I just want to be sure that mine is misaligned as I've always thought it was how they were made. Mines not slabbed, just in a capital slab I bought for it.. But in the pic below you can see the place where the label would usually go on top, and you can see that on the reverse its also on the top of the design (which is right side up)... I took the slab insert out for the photo, and couldn't photo the whole slab or you couldn't see the coin to see the alignment. So I guess the question is should I have it TPG slabbed? And will it be given the 180 degree rotated die designation? And the big question... Does it add any premium? Even in AU grade? Not that I'd sell it but my curiosity has been sparked!   Thanks again, that's awesome, I thought I just had an ordinary 1861 thrime.. But now I know it's a bit unique! And again, yours is just stunning!! |

I have heard that NGC will attribute Die Rotation if it is greater than 30 degrees. Gyrene7483 has a thread about his 1861 Trime and his NGC slab states " Medallic Alignment"; https://goccf.com/t/112109Looks like there are quite a few 1861's like these. Edited by oih82w8
