Recently found this interesting one of Septimius
Seller listed it simply as
Septimius Severus Bronze Rv Elephant

Bronze-Elephant

Bronze-Elephant

Coin measures 24-26mm and appears to me to be more bronze like than orichalcum.
But the flan is thick (4mm) weighing in at 19.34 grams.
The closest match I can find is Sear #6417 (brass) Sestertius
Rv MVNIFICENTIA AVG S C Elephant walking right
dated AD 197
But if it is bronze it is a bit early for this sort of 'debasement'. The diameter is more like an dupondius/as and it would have looked odd next to a normal diameter sestertius of the era..... besides being the wrong color.

Well the price was right coming in at $20 total
And who doesn't like an elephant ?

I was bidding on a denarii of his with an elephant not long ago, it got way out of my comfort zone so I had to let it go. Since then I've been looking for a similar one, So... i'am kind of jealous.

Well it was a bit of an impulse purchase and it isn't quite as 'buff' as I would have liked.
I may flip it in the fall should something else catch my eye.
I will 'announce' it should it become available.

I too wanted a bronze elephant. I currently have two. Neither of them is Roman, they are both Bactrian. One is a large 12 g + Trichalkon issued under the authority of Demetrius I of Bactria and the other is a small chalkon of Menander the Great of Bactria. Both of them have an elephant bust obverse and with Greek and Godly items Caduceus and Club. Neat coins. Anywho, I do love the Bronze elephant and if I saw it I probably would have grabbed it up if the price was right.

Looks to be the extinct North African Elephant, which would make sense for the "Libyan" Septimius.
