I have noticed on ebay that I will list something, relist it over and over, and it will not sell. Today I did some checking and there are certain sellers that list their items extremely overpriced and sell them. For example, I have an item on ebay right now for $25 free shipping. The exact same item, on a bigger seller sold for $30 with $20 shipping. They were in basically the same shape and everything. I have seen this a lot lately, what is the deal?

Could be timing, "key" words in titles, known seller, shill bidding, proper category placement, etc...

Emulate what the other seller is doing, but don't copy them, use a different arrangment of words in the title.

You have a feedback score of 24. You have been selling on ebay less than a year. I would pay more from a seller that has 1000+ ebay score and been on the site for more than 3 years, than buy from you. You have to build your reputation on ebay just like anywhere else in the business world. People are not going to just trust you right off the bat.

I know this account has 24 feedback and says I have only been selling for a year, but I have been selling and dealing with ebay a lot longer than that, this is a different account. I understand what you are saying about the trusted seller and 10000 feedback thing though. However, do you think it would make a $150 difference on some things?

To some people, yes. Just like I would trust a lawyer that has 20 years experience over someone that just passed the bar exam. Might cost me a lot more, but you get what you pay for.

Yep. Just like a B&M dealer, I get my best prices from repeat customers who know that I'm not skimping on quality.

I did some checking, and some of the people that are selling way higher than I can don't have that much more feedback than I do. If people would leave me feedback, it would help. I can understand how some people would want to go with the big store that has sold for years with 10000 feedback, but when they only have 50 more feedback than I do, I really can't see that making as big a difference. What do you guys think? It is getting pretty annoying putting things on ebay for super cheap, expecting them to bid up, and they always don't sell.

I am thinking you need to learn patience. I have been on ebay for 14 years now. It was very slow going when I first started. I always check out the "sold listings" link for products I want to sell. It gives me a good idea of what to expect in the way of value. It also tells me what categories are best for listing the item in. I look for key words in the title and description.

EDIT: I took a closer look at your listings. You offer no return policy. What kind of confidence does that give potential buyers? Your photos need to be better. The background you are using looks like a piece of cardboard and is way too neutral in color. Using a solid back or solid white background is much better. The coin lot you are offering is really no more than pocket change. nothing really special. Your description is long and boring looking. Most buyers will not take the time to read a lot of plain text.

Really? Someone was selling the exact same thing? Seems unlikely to me.

bassmaster, please understand I am not trying to be rude. I am just to the point. Those were things that I noticed from looking at your listings.

Yeah Seal, I know you're not being rude, and I have noticed some of those things about my listings also. The thing problem is, is I have sold the exact same things for a higher price before in the same situation. I was selling way better at the start of this account with the same stuff. It appears ebay sales are down for me all of a sudden, but not for everyone else. Are your ebay sales down any?

By the way, one of my lots has went off 3 times showing it has sold, however, all three times the buyers have either not paid or backed out. Do you think this affects the sale of this item? It should have sold first thing at the price I am asking.

Yes weerdsteve, just like you would say a 1958 Wheat cent graded G4 is basically the same thing as another 1958 Wheat cent graded G4, a gas pedal with light wear out of a 1977 ford truck is basically the same thing as another gas pedal with light wear out of a different 1977 ford truck.

I think as a whole, all sales are down right now. The worst time of year is summer. Especially for items that are not "necessities". My sales have actually been ok during this time, but I am concentrating on lower priced items. I am making it up in volume. I have sold close to $700 in each of the last two months. For me that is average. This by no means is my main source of income. In fact I just use the funds to fund my own collection. I used to sell antiques. I coupled my antique store sales here in Houston with my small antique items on ebay. It was great for a while. Then when the economy started to tank so did the antiques market. I had been a coin collector for years and decided that after some research I could sell coins as well. The collectible coin market has been affected very little when compared to other collectible markets. It was a good fit. Combine my ebay sales with my website sales, and I am making well over $1000 a month. I can live with that. It also makes the wife happy that I am not spending any of the family cash for my "habit."

Buyers are very cautious right now. Ride out the storm, better days are on the horizon. Find your niche', and do it the best you can. You need to remember that ebay is the most competitive marketplace in the world. Make yourself stand out. My reputation of shipping quickly is what has really helped me. Try different approaches and see what works for you.

I'm curious. How can you offer free shipping on an item when the other seller needs to charge $20 shipping? What's the item?

Thanks a lot Seal, I thought overall sales were down. The item fusiafinch is a truck part. If I have an item for $30 with $20 shipping, I usually just bump it up top $50 free shipping. This way, if it is not a flat rate box, I don't overcharge the buyer for shipping.

That brings me to another point. Know what shipping is going to cost BEFORE you list. Shipping on most of my listings is $2.50, I did not pull that amount out of thin air. That amount will cover the actual shipping charges, plus all my other expenses like bubble mailer, postage label, ebay and PayPal fees, ect. I would try to nail down what it will cost you to ship, and charge that amount. Obviously FREE SHIPPING has not helped.
