Hi everyone...seeking your help in determining if I should buy this coin. Real or fake? I am told the no mint mark of this year is worth quite a bit. What grade would you give this coin? Thanks very much

I would advise you to save your money and steer clear of this offering. The reverse has the characteristics of a Chinese replica ... weak/mushy in the tail feather area and the "One Dollar" yet other reverse details are strong. If by a long shot this is genuine, it would be considered a "details" coin (would not grade). The current pricing for a G4 example is about $700.

Thanks for the reply but what do you mean it's a detail coin?
Also, would weighing the coin give me a good indication of its authenticity? If it weighs 26 grams it should be real right?
Thanks again

Details coins are "problem" coins. Grading companies will assign a details grade with the notation that the coin is cleaned, altered, whizzed, etc. These details coins are not well accepted in the collecting community and lose at least 50% of their value over a non-details coin.
Weighing coins can eliminate obvious fakes (well under or over weight), but should not be solely relied upon for determining if the coin is genuine. Counterfeiters have been known to use common date coins to remint counterfeit rareties.

Those Tail Feathers just bother me, along with the bow right below them. Appear Mushy and blurry.

I agree with SeatedNut. The reverse details of the tail feathers, wreath and logo appear wrong. Most likely a chinese fake.

Isn't that normal wear for a circulated coin? I'm so disappointed

Quote: Isn't that normal wear for a circulated coin? No, not in the absence of corresponding wear elsewhere. The date is in the wrong position as well; only one die pair was used to strike this issue.

I'm so glad this forum exists or I would have been ripped off.
A huge thanks to everyone for your knowledge and insight. I will definitely not be buying this coin

First glance to me "it don't look right" so good call on saving your money, I've been seeing a lot of these being sold over at alibaba far east website, they even sell in PCGS holders (all fake) though the site says they don't tolerate counterfeits, yeah right. The scary thing is most sales and feedback are from buyers in the USA that ordered multiple pieces.

I'll start by saying that it does not look like a genuine 1894-P. I am going to propose that could be a genuine coin since the mushy details seems to be mostly around where the mint mark would be but not really anywhere else. I think the mint mark(perhaps an O given the weak strike and lower price relative to a S) was removed, the area smoothed , and the whole coin cleaned to help hide the alteration.
