They look like 70's....

Even though your pics are great, when you get the candy-cane ASE in your hand you will be blown away. The reverse proof WAS my favorite modern coin. There is just so much more detail, the stars draped around Liberty stand out! WOW!!

I got to see these today at work as one of the delivery guys that drops off packages here brought these in to show me. Sorry for the crappy pics as I don't have photoshop or on my computer at work and the lighting in the office sucks. The reverse proof should not be a 70 in my opinion as there is a spec or chip or something between 2 of the rays on the obverse.

barryg, your pictures are fantastic! Could you please share the information on the setup you used to get the individual coin pictures? Type of camera (or scanner), lens, distance ("film" plane to coin), focal length, type of lighting, etc. Your pics are of such high quality that knowing how you got them would help those of us who strive to achieve similar results when photographing our collections. I have seven sets coming at the end of shipping, two ordered on July 03, and five on July 06 (three in the morning and two just minutes before closing) so all are sitting with the September 17 shipping date, but I expect that shipping will complete well before then. I would still love to see a fully brilliant proof ASE, perhaps twinned with a fully satin proof version. Neither of these has ever been produced. The uncirculated coins come close to being satin proofs but lack the second strike to raise the relief to its fullest. I love my fully brilliant proof coins from the 1950s and would really like to see that kind of finish on the ASE.

I'm honored you think so highly of my pictures, Clair! To be honest, though, the details are rather boring...

Right now I'm using an el cheapo 8 megapixel digital camera (no detachable lenses) that fortunately has a macro setting. The "secret" is simply getting enough light. To do that, I use a pair of clip-on lamps with 100-what "natural light" bulbs, one overhead and one to the side. I then shoot through half of a plastic gallon milk jug with a hole cut out of the top as a diffuser. It looks like this:

As I said, I use the macro setting and just hold the camera as steady as possible above the milk carton (no tripod). Once I take the pictures, I then tweak the images in Photoshop to do some automatic color correction and fiddle with the brightness and contrast a bit (using the "Curves" tool).
