I'm having trouble getting excited about the new issues. The cost of silver has dropped by close to half and the RCM products just go up and up. I've been starting to look backwards and trying to buy older not so "hot" items now. Recently I got a great deal on the Canadian Maple with the D-Day privy. Okay that's my plans, but like everyone else I'll be watching for the new releases in September.

Interesting why they would take the second canopy coin off the mints web site, I understand its sold out but they never took a sold out new release coin completely off the site, they would have awaiting stock etc.

Canopy 2nd was moved to the bottom of the "Silver" category with "awaiting stock" on RCM website.

I believe the 2nd canopy coin has been on awaiting stock since it released to the public. RCM like to list all their non sold out item first and put the awaiting stock in later pages

Yes - I just got my Barn Owl today and I'm excited to share my first picture here on the community! It looks pretty good. I wasn't sure I would like it due to the completely coloured background. It is quite different from the rest of the series. I am going to keep collecting these but I think I'm really starting to like the fine silver coins much better. I love the duck series! and a closer shot:

Thanks for sharing, 2lovebirds! And to CCF Do not rush with the silver. Think what exactly do you want, go through the coins on the websites like RCM, Perth Mint, Talisman coins...on those, where is the best representation. Love to the birds on the silver leads to the Ural Owl

Every time that I see the new ½ ounce silver Year of the Horse coin, I think about the knight in a chess set. Anyone else?

Quote: I wasn't sure I would like it due to the completely coloured background. It is quite different from the rest of the series. It's certainly a departure. In addition to the presence of the background, the bird is quite different. All the previous birds have been fairly small and colorful species, likely to be found in suburban type backyards or at least in parks. Not that I mind these changes. It's still an attractive coin and I plan to buy one. My only quibble is the range of the bird! (Link to map on Cascades Raptor Center below) http://eraptors.org/Maps/BrnOwlMP.jpgNote most of us have very little chance of ever seeing one in Canada so it's definitely an odd choice for a series entitled Birds of Canada. I'd have thought a Snowy Owl or Great Gray Owl or even a Great Horned Owl would have been more in keeping with a Canadian themed series.

The Barn Owl is a nighttime hunter & need to see around dawn hunting in rural areas. This has been my experience.

My main conern about this change in style to the bird series is whether there is still engraving done to the bird. I only have the last few bird coins, and the coloured birds are all engraved and hence has "depth", is that still the case with this new "barn owl" coin?
@2lovebirds, do you see any engraving on the barn owl?
