1947 Maple Leaf, Pointed 7. The coin has toned somewhat, PCGS would definitely not call this one 'Red'.

Probably my favourite George VI specimen cent. The flatbed scanner really does not do this coin any justice. The mirror fields are spectacular.

All of the 67 $20 gold that I ever saw were gems .. ....can't show mine here as they all went to the pot when the gold was up past $1800 ....and I wasn't here....... Everyone that I saw at auction...and I saw them regularly... sold for melt value.. Do you remember what that 67 specimen set with the $20 gold sold for,..when ordered from the mint...? It wasn't much because gold had not made any movement at the ordering time. I kept my OE mailing box up until last year... Hindsight is always 20/20... If I remember right,..the cost also included shipping ...

1937 50 cent Matte Specimen. I need to reimage this one at some point. It was hard to capture the colorful toning on my old camera.

What an amazing matt specimen...looks like it's "SP 68++" with that lovely toning and perfect surfaces...

Thanks. It's in an NGC 65 holder. I may well crack it and send it to ICCS. I think it should easily be a 65, possibly even 66 at ICCS. The strike is full and there are very few marks from what I can see through the toning.

It appears they started making PL in 1949 with creation of the numismatic division.
1949-1952 $1 in many of the varieties. In 1951 they seem to have sold a 25c, 50c, and $1 set. In 1953 they made complete sets.
Of course in 1954 they began offering PL sets in earnest and seem to have abandoned making specimen coins until 1964.
Would anyone say the PL quality fell as quantities made exploded, pressuring the return of specimen for prestige offerings?

I know experience plays a big part, but are there any good "tells" to distinguish a PL from a SP or business strike. Each series has its tells. SPP...what are some tells for the one cent series?

Most of the modern PL's that we see are all very mirror like over the whole surface. You're right though, in the past, there were a lot of "experimental finishes" going onto the coins. I've got an interesting 53 $1 that I still can't place.......

As a comparison, here is my MS-66, which has a mirror field so may be an improperly attributed PL.

@DEVLEC: The specimen has definitely a MUCH stronger strike. And its rims are gorgeous.
