You know how it is. You pour yourself a cold one and surf the net for bargains and then you get all excited about something like this:

Download Attachment: Education-Is-Key...especially-With-Counterfeits 1914-D.jpg
12.55 KB

Now compare that mint mark and date to a 1914-D from Coin Facts:

Education-Is-Key...especially-With-Counterfeits

I looked it up in my Lincoln Cent spiral notebook and the first coin looks like a 1944-D cent shaved to look like a 1914-D.

Thank goodness for my Lincoln books. I emailed the ebay seller and am waiting for a response (asking him about returns and all).

What do you think?

Wow, nice catch zak, only a person thats interested and has reference materials on pennies woulda caught that one--Education-Is-Key...especially-With-Counterfeits That woulda blown right by me--Altho, I must admit, there is a severe separation there-You also have to admit, that upon closer inspection, whoever did the shave is a pro looks like-

Here's the ebay listing:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...photohosting

Now, the pics are not good enough to see if their are VDB initials on Lincoln's shoulder as this practice started in 1918. The space between the 19 and 14 bothered me, so I did more research and found this fake pic of a 1914-D Lincoln:

Education-Is-Key...especially-With-Counterfeits

This is a picture of a "shaved" 1944-D Lincoln Cent made to look like a 1914-D. Again, note the spacing between the 19 and 14 on this ebay listing with bids up to $200. Hmmmmm

Zak

I took the pic and looked at it magnified, there is something there but the pic quality is not good enough to be sure that it is in fact a VDB

Okay, my question is how many of you have reported this auction as being a fake? A current bid of $195.50 and a description of AU-54. Bid with confidence because of a 100% positive feedback rating.
Oh yeah, let's send some more newbies to ebay.

I reported it after posting it here (to make sure I wasn't blowing smoke). I contacted the seller asking him about these concerns, warned the current bidders, and yes...reported it to ebay.

Actually, I feel pretty good that you guys (and ladies) think it is a fake as I do for all of the reasons given.

Imagine that? Reading and research pays off! Education-Is-Key...especially-With-Counterfeits

Oh absolutely this coin is a fake. With the few descriptions you have given about the spacing of the date, there are several other areas that jump out.
Look at the word LIBERTY in relation to Lincoln. The mintmark in relation to the date. The bottom of the Lincoln bust in relation to the rim. The angle of Lincoln's Head in relation to the word GOD. This coin screams FAKE. While this is one of the most obvious altered dates in the series, it seems to be fooling several current bidders.

I have leaned that they doesn't have to be a VDB on the shoulder....I had a fake 1914 cent (yes it was a fake and yes it was a P) the guy that was doing it messed up and left off the D....I don't know if he covered the VDB or what but it wasn't there...
I sold it now and don't have a photo.

There should not be a VDB on a 1914 cent, they werent added to the shoulder until 1918,after being removed from the reverse in 1909.

Nice pickup Zak! Thanks for the tutorial.
Seller doesn't seem on the surface to be a coin scamster- has 98 recntly sold items, none are coins. He may be unaware that this is fake. I sent him an email and will report listing if I don't hear backj soon. Did anyone else get a reply from him?

Here's the mail I sent the seller......

Hi! I was wondering if you were aware that the date is altered on this coin. It was originally a 1944d, shaved to look like a 1914d. The space between 19 and 14 is a dead giveaway! You may want to revise your posting to reflect this. Someone will be very upset about buying a fake that is worth about 5 cents! RMKardes P.S There is no accepted AU54 designation in numismatics!

I have jokingly referred to that particular counterfeit as the "Wide 9 1" variety and the "19 14D Lincoln". It is pretty obvious once you know what you are looking at (isn't that always the case?) but I bet people get fooled by it just the same.

Thats just it...it wasn't a 1914---it was a fake 1914 and it looked to be made from a 1944....I wish I had a photo of it.

Well, it sold for $381. I contacted the buyer and let him know our feelings about the coin. He emailed me back and appreciated the heads up.

Has anyone heard from the seller? I emailed this person several times hoping that they would see the error of their ways. This is just 1 more perfect example of why ebay is a problem. Hopefully the winner will NOT pay the $381 for this coin. I expect that if the winner does not pay, the seller will offer it to every other bidder. Someone will BUY this counterfeit coin. Sad indeed!
