I just found their site and they will insure collector coins. You can send from Canada /USA, they cover a number of different carriers and package types. I just bought insurance for $100 light packet USA. You can set up an account or a one time only purchase. You do not need tracking or delivery confirmation either. I found this tip reading ebay community forum.
I'm interested in hearing, if anyone has used them/ opinions.

I looked into them before, but have never used them. I would use them though if they insured lettermail, but they obviously don't.

Canada Post insures up to 500$ on coins. If we can get up to 1000$ + it's 1.25/100$ where Canada Post it's 1.80/100$ if I am not mistaken ... I see it as a good alternative. What do you think ?

I had to ship an $1800 coin back to the mint about 4 years ago. Short story... it got lost. It was shipped insured by Canada Post... the cheque was paid in about 6 weeks. If I remember, it was about $30 for shipping including insurance - money well spent.

@Dcadon, how ? I understand it can get lost but it is written black on white that Canada Post insures coins only for 500$, how did they pay you back 1800 ?

A little off topic.

Has anyone here used COD to ship or buy coins.

Is it a good way to buy coins from distance if I do not have Paypal account.

b) The maximum amount payable by Canada Post is:
i $500 for shipments containing coins, jewellery, manufactured and non-manufactured precious
stones and metals, cancelled or uncancelled postage stamps, and reissuing fees (passport fees,
duplicate passport photo cost, immigration visa fees, driver's licence fees, birth certificate fees,
financial instrument cancellation fees, airline tickets reissuing fees and additional postage fees).

Hey Adorus, it was a funny thing about that... I used a local 'Beckers postal outlet'. They calculated the expedited value which included $100 insurance. They then asked what value I wanted it insured to. I told them, and they sold it to me right up to the $1800 value. (it was $10 + an additional $1 per $100 insurance) I seem to remember that they got in trouble for doing it, but I still was holding a ticket that showed $1800 insurance on my parcel. Payment was prompt. - by Canada Post standards anyway.

The evil side of me is wondering if that "local 'Beckers postal outlet'" just got 1800$ richer..

Well I am not sure about everyone else but the Canada Post which I go to never asks what I am shipping or if I did put insurance what it was. Just like the max of $5000 dollars of insurance of something like that so I could put whatever amount on a coin I was shipping since they never ask so they do not know it is a coin. :/

That sounds like a useful site to use. Especially if they'd insure small packet's from CanadaPost.

Scary story, I shipped domestically this one time and figured it was safe since it was in Canada, I paid only for a signature. The coin was worth about 1200. From sorting to en route the tracking just stopped. 4 weeks went by and there was no change, so I decided to contact the buyer with no reply. Then I contacted Canadapost which told me they'd look into it and not to worry they hardly ever lose anything. A week later she told me they cant find it and she was going to process a claim. Needless to say my heart sunk. But lucky for me the buyer told me everything a few days later that everything was fine.
I called Canadapost and told them to cancel the claim, and asked them what went wrong. She told me sometimes the mail man forgets to scan the package. My other question was.....but why did you charged me for a signature then? I was told I would receive a refund for the shipping. ( which never came but I didn't care because it could've been a lot worst, Sorry story was a little off topic )

But the story leads me too this. I've been paying for insurance on coins for a while now and they've always let me buy what ever I want at times over $500. Or at least CanadaPost has never stopped me. I would assume they'd have to honor my ticket like Dcadon's

I was thinking the same. But that only work domestic shipping. If you ship to u.s, you have to declare it. Unless your buyer like to pay duties and taxes, you would have to declare it as silve coins

Hey Shopaholic, When the inquiry was complete, the trail ended at the drivers door that picked up from the Beckers. He signed for the package, and scanned it. It never made it to the main postal depot in town. I was very surprised nothing further was done/investigated.

I read some days ago someone who asked how to ship a very expensive coin (Superman gold coin) but I don't find that thread.

Anyway, look what kind of shipping use Talisman:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Canada-2012...150868111377
US $2,699.95

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Australia-2...181208653728
US $2,188.00

Talisman uses $59.95 USPS Priority Mail International so I suppose USPS works with some kind of insurance to cover over $ 2,000... what do you think?

It would be interesting to find out who places like GAtewest and Colonial acres use for shipping insurance when they ship large orders by Canada post. It's good to hear from these dealers, and get some concrete information. I wouldn't count on CP to honor anything over $500, if it's a coin. They could read you the regulations and refund your insurance fee. A few different PO need to be contacted. This way a solid answer may be arrived at. Rox
