After reading half a dozen books on the subject to find out what appealed to me I picked up a couple of bronzes: [/URL] [/URL] Ptolemaic Kingdom Ptolemy IV Philopator 222-204 BC AE 33 of Alexandria Diademed head of Zeus right / Eagle standing on thunderbolt left, cornucopiae at left. SNGCop.212, Sv.993 VF, brown patina, chipped - $100 [/URL] [/URL] Sicily, Syracuse. Hieron II, 274-216 BC. AE 26. Diademed head of Hieron I, sigma beneath / Lancer, AP monogram below. SNGANS.945v, aVF, dark brown patina. - $135 $235 for the pair, marked down from $270. Excuse the poor images; my scanner doesn't handle relief well. The dealer, a specialist in all things ancient, had quite the stock. What do you think about these pieces? It wouldn't be distressing to learn I overpaid as this is my first entry into what I hope will be a rewarding journey through ancient history. Also, please recommend helpful references on Greek and Roman - especially those that deal in depth with historical context. Report this Post to the Staff

He did $2000 worth of business in the time I was rummaging through his bronzes. I've got his business card with an email address and phone number. Here are photographs of the Syracuse. I wouldn't say you overpaid. I like your choices and would welcome them into my collection anytime. Kudos my friend and welcome to the dark side. What are you buying next.... I think you did alright on both. Nice choices for your first ancients! As for resources, they are vast. Some are online, some not. Masis Pillar of the Community United Kingdom 946 Posts	Posted 08/25/2013 5:24 pm I found David Van Meter's "The Handbook of Roman Imperial Coins" to offer an in-depth look into the history that goes with the coins, not just a basic reference book like most are, for example, what a certain issue of coin may commemorate.
