Here's a coin I've wanted for my classic commem set for some time. I figured it was about a $500 coin, but I came across this one for $410. It was in an ANACS MS-63 holder (the old small white holder with barcode and green text). Since it's going in my Dansco, I broke it out and treated it with an ammonia bath to remove some green spots. I love this design. There are, of course, strong design elements on the back, the Union and Confederate shields, the beautifully sculpted oak and olive branches. But nothing drives home for me the entire notion of a Civil War like the fact that there were REUNIONS for soldiers from BOTH SIDES. For the reunion this coin commemorates, there were only dozens of surviving soldiers. What I consider the most moving part of the design is the jugate busts on the obverse. As Anthony Swiatek mentions in his Encyclopedia of you S Silver and Gold Commemoratives, the two figures are similar enough in appearance that they could perhaps be brothers. In the spirit of my stamp/coin tie in project that is in another thread, here is the stamp block I associate with this coin. Though it commemorates a Confederate reunion, the imagery and sentiment seems like a good tie-in.

The Gettysburg is one of the best designs in American coinage, still a void in my set. Congratulations

Nice addition to your collection, I agree that it's definitely a coin with very strong historical imagery.
Regarding a philatelic tie-in, you might also consider Scott 1180 which was issued to mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg.

I have that Scott 1180 somewhere, I'll post a photo when I track it down. It's alright, but the reunion stamp just seemed more appropriate to me. It would probably be better to either go with the Gettysburg stamp, or use the PAIR of reunion stamps: The stamp shown (scott #998) is for the last reunion of Confederate soldiers, the same design but in red ink (scott #985) commemorated the final reunion of the Grand Army of the Republic for Union soldiers. The reunion stamps are 1948 and 1951 issues. The Gettysburg stamp is 1963. I dunno which one(s) will settle into my hybrid album yet.

A very nice coin at a good price. I think the two reunion stamps together would look great with this.

Very nice coin .... agreed that the historical images on this example are exemplary ... and add credence to the Gettysburg Half being one of the all-tome best USA classic silver commemorative.
Congratulations on this lovely acquisition.

I can't post a pic of my AG03 Gettysburg but there is one in my Registry set. I think the wear just adds a lot of class to these two soldiers.

oh man, an AG-3 Gettysburg has to look awesome, but then imagine it's history -- perhaps it was circulated because it was a pocket piece of one of the handful of soldiers at the reunion (or a son). Awesome!

I have often wondered about who might have carried some of these pocketpieces and my guess on the Gettysburg is that it was a son of a Civil War soldier like you said. I'm sure that a lot of the Souths CW vets carried the Stone Mountains.

Truly one of the great classic commem's. I've been collecting the early's for some time and I'm trying my damndest to fill them all with Gem quality or better. Unless it's cost prohibitive. I alone can make that decision. Good job on getting yours and I'd like to see the whole set that you have when you got time.
