I've just found this coin in my back garden. It was covered in wet dirt, so gave it a gentle clean with a lightly damped cloth to remove the soil as I know you're not meant to clean old coins. But even so I can't make out much detail. The front is a mystery to me, I can barely read the letters and whatever is in the centre, just looks like a blob and the back seems to be a lion/horse/camel sitting on the ground underneath a palm tree.

Any help would be much appreciated!

I would bet its a button, the blob on the back is where it was attached to the garment.

LOL. Just my luck. I've never seen a button with that kind of pattern on it though.

Also it is heavy, about the weight I would expect from a coin of its size, and it also sounds like a coin. When I let it drop onto a table, it doesn't sound to me like it would be a button, but then again I don't know what old buttons could be made of.

Looks like the civil war style buttons we dig up in this area. My guess would be South Carolina based on the tree but I am far from an expert. If it is they can get a little pricey so do take the time to look farther.

I found this one on line just so you know way I was thinking "civil war"

That would be amazing if it was an American Civil War coin as it's a subject I am interested in... but being in the UK I have my doubts sadly. =D

Lion(?) and palm tree suggests Middle East or Africa and perhaps a British Army button.

Or could just be a fantasy button to dress up a jacket, you know, the sort that lounge lizards wear as they try to chat up rich widows.
