For the proof 1887/6 Three Cent Nickels, what's the different between an 1887/(6) and 1887/6 strong overdate? I've been trying to find some pictures but I can't find any. And can you even see the (6) in an 1887/(6) overdate? Thanks |

I don't have either one, so I pulled images of two PCGS slabs. The top was labeled 1887/6 PR65 "Strong Overdate" The lower one was just labeled 1887/6 PR64. To my eyes, I clearly see the 7/6 for the "strong" one; the lower is hard to make out any overdate--to me.  I'm sure the 3CN experts will chime in soon.   Edited by DVCollector

That's the same thing I was trying to figure out, I can see it when it's strong but when it's not, what am I looking for?

Yeah--you got me.  I know some US overdates have very subtle markers--I don't know what to look for. |

but when it's not, what am I looking for? You're looking for the second full date punch, in the denticles. They screwed this one up, but good.  All 4 digits can be found in the denticles. The strongest part will be a line between the two denticles from 1-8. It's easily visible in the image of the "Strong" coin above, but all of them have it. |

look at the right base of the 1, and I think you can see part of the six peeking out of the right side of the 7 just below the bar of the 7.

There is the date on my coin. I don't see the overdate? Maybe that little thing above the 7 (although the 7 normally looks like that)?

I can see it on your coin, the extra '-' to the right of the base of the 1. Mine doesn't have that though.

It might be nothing wrong with yours.
Hopefully someone could tell what's wrong with the 7.
To me, the 7 looks like someone might of hit it.

Well, PCGS called it an 1887/(6), so I'm trying to figure out how/why, as I can't see anything that would indicate that from all other known examples. Basically, I'm trying to figure out if they messed up, and called it a proof when it wasn't.
