Regarding U.S. currency, (1) What do people mean when they are referring to an "Fr." number such as "Fr.2400" for a $10 1928 Gold note? Where is that # referred to on the note, how does one know a certain bill is a certain Fr.#? (2) No one ever seems to refer to the small number(s) in the upper left and lower right corners of bills. For instance, I have a 1953 $2, red seal, AA block, but in the upper left hand corner is a "G" and in the lower right a "G3" - what do these letters and numbers mean, a series of sorts? Thanks in advance

to CCF. The FR# is a catalog number from http://www.ask.com/question/what-is...ber-currency. The G and G3 are printing plate #'s

No question is silly to the honest asker.

1. I believe "Fr numbers" are a catalogue reference, referring to the entry number in A guide book of United States Paper Money by Arthur L. Friedberg. You won't find any way of finding out the Fr number just by looking at the note; you need a copy of the catalogue.

2. I believe the little letters and numbers in the corners of old-style US notes are referred to as "position numbers". They tell yo where on the sheet of uncut banknotes the banknote came from. They are used in fault detection; if they spot an error on a finished note, they can know exactly where to go on the printing plate to look for the problem. This BEP .pdf file shows the position numbers on a $1 note.

I believe an FR note can mean a federal reserve note, as well

Thank you everyone for your replies. The Fr.#'s and the small letter/number in the corner of bills really had me baffled. I appreciate your taking the time to respond. I look forward to spending time in this forum. :)
