while not as nearly as nice as the OPs coin, what do you think this one worth ? It weights 27.89g and perhaps XF ?

A very nice coin - better condition than mine. I'd say GF in our grading.

very nice coin! one of my favorites, my 1889 km2 cost me $52 a couple years back, I got lucky and got the lion's nose. todays prices are higher

when the lion's nose is gone, its vf at best, the nose being one of the first to go.

IMHO the Ethiopian Birr of Menelik is one of the worlds most attractive coins.

Yes, it is a magnificent coin to me but do you have any extra hidden meaning for it, austrokiwi? Who know the designer(s) of this coin? It is hard to imagine the old Ethiopian Kingdom could produce such a gorgeous thaler when you see the poverty of today's Ethiopian. How ironical the history was!

just some food for thought- the Ethiopian birr's lion nose is just like the peacock body in the Burma 1852 1kyat, they both jut out from the plane of the coin's edge, thus when the coin is in lain down position, as most circulated coins tend to be, those areas get quickly worn out a lot faster than the body.

anyway it being worn out separate from the rest, is for me, IMHO, a great indication the coin is for real.
