Hello folks!

Here we have what I think is a very beautiful $5 1914.However as I'm new to coin collecting and have very limited knowledge in regards to conditions I'm here to seek some of your valuable insight.

First i'd like to know if anyone here can help me out with this red spot on the top right corner of the I on the reverse and the dark red/black spot on the second thistle to the right on the shield?

The spot on the thistle is very dark reddish brown and goes on to be almost completely black.

i know these coin have %10 copper and this could be the reason but I'm very interested to know what might have caused it.

Second i'd like to know what you think this would grade and whether or not this red spot affects the grade!

Thanks a bunch!

Years ago the slang term for those kind of spots on coins was referred to as saliva spots. I'm sure today there is a much better technical name for such a spot. They usually developed from some kind of moisture getting on the coin and contaminating the surface. It could happen easily if someone sneezed or coughed when the coin was unprotected. This is why you always see mint workers wearing white gloves and masks when working around newly minted coins. It can happen to both gold and silver coins. I am sure there probably are other causes but saliva spots are one of the more common causes of such spots.
MS60-62 IMO, Very nice coin with beautiful lustre. Thanks for sharing.

Nice coin!
Red spots on gold coins are due to tarnishing of copper rich areas in the alloy.
The higher the percentage of copper in the coin the more likely it will show red spots.

For grade I was thinking MS-63, but I can't really help with anything else.

Copper spots, due to the incomplete mixing of the gold and copper. Sometimes they also form a carbon spot. The American double eagles from the 1900's and 1920's are notorious for them, because the high mintages meant less time to properly mix the metals.

Your 1914 $5 looks like a Bank of Canada hoard coin. Correct?

I recognized that black foam background from my 1914 $10. I have to say they did reasonably well on selecting out the better coins. I am satisfied with mine. I am going to leave it in the original RCM capsule. Not too concerned about professional grading since the population has increased quite a bit after the Bank of Canada release.

I went with NGC. I personally prefer them over pcgs. I never send any coins to ICCS.

Hi Moe,

There are ways to get rid of the red spot and preserve the coin.
