This is my first coin of the rebel/usurper Aureolus.

He was proclaimed emperor by the legions in Illyria in around A.D. 267 but was defeated by Gallienus shortly afterwards. He hid himself up in Mediolanum only to be killed by the troops of Claudius II Gothicus, in A.D. 268.

These coins were minted in the name of his ally Postumus.

This was a bargain basement purchase because the coin was being sold as a Postumus coin 8-).

The coins are often on small, tight flans. This one has managed to retain some detail if not all the legends.

Aureolus Ant.
Obv:â€" IMP C POSTVMVS P F AVG, Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right
Rev:â€" CONCORD EQVIT, Fortuna standing left, foot on prow, holding patera and rudder, S in exergue
Minted in Mediolanum (Milan). A.D. 268
Referenceâ€" RIC Postumus 372. Cohen.20 -. Cunetio-.

Aureolus

An issue I've been meaning to familiarise myself with - I see a lot of Postumus coins. Nice spot.

When I had a leaf through a big UK found Gallic hoard I bet I rummaged past a couple of these and didnt even know it. More for the eagle eyed, I suppose.

I hate to be a buzzkill but I would resist the opinion of calling this a coin of Aureolus. There are many instances of commanders and governors who had control over mints and coined in the names of the incumbent emperors before rebelling. Yet, we don't associate the coins minted under their delegated authority with the usurper but rather with the effigy and name on the coin.

I think this whole thing started in the 19th century when a fake IMP AVREOLVS AVG coin turned up. Every Roman coin collector then wanted to find their own Aureolus so dealers of the day began marketing Milanese ants of Postumus as Aureolus. One could, by analogy, claim a "Saturninus" from any Alexandrian Probus or a Silbannacus from an Aemilian!
