Help-With-Marian-Anderson-Gold-Coin

I've looked all over the place, but can't find solid info on this gold coin. It's a 1980 half ounce gold coin. I think it's the 1st year of the gold commems.

I've density tested it, and it tests at 90% gold. Also tested on my X-ray fluorescence machine, which confirms 90% gold.

Another post here states that this coin is listed in the Red Book, but I can't find it in my 2011 edition.

Can ya'll point me somewhere? I'm looking for firm confirmation of mintage, weight, and gold composition.

Thanks!

This is not an official US Mint release. At least not a Modern or Commemorative coin released by the mint.

I am moving this topic to the 'Identification: Unidentified Coins, Medals, and Tokens' forum. Hopefully someone will have more information.

Actually, it is. There's a nice Wiki article about the series.

But I can't find the actual gold concentration and other specs anywhere.

Ah, cool!

However, it is still not a coin and the original placement in the US Modern Coins forum was incorrect.

Regardless, I learned something, so off to the right forum, Tokens, Medals, and other Exonumia.

Here you go...

http://www.usmint.gov/historianscor...oc=pr544.pdf

The 1980 medallions were 90% Gold, 10% Copper. The 1981 medallions were 90% Gold, 3% Silver, 7% Copper.

No problem. It was not that much work.

First Rule of Using Wikipedia: Always follow the sources!

In this case, that link was number three under Other Sources.

Regardless, it was interesting. As I said, I learned something new about something I never knew existed.

I bought 3 of these 12 years ago at an estate auction for $385 after all fees.they came in a styrofoam holder with a piece of plastic covering the top.I don't remember exactly what was inscribed on it but it was something like 1980 marian anderson commemorative coin series.I do remember it said three 1/2 oz. ?k gold and 1/18 bronze coins it never stated that it had anything else. I could never find any pricing on them. I ended up selling them several years ago to a coin/precious metals dealer for a little over twice as much as I paid for them and that was before the price of gold started selling for ridiculous amounts.I hope anything that I have mentioned will be helpful.good luck!

Right! The Marian Anderson piece was sold by the Mint as a 1/2 ounce gold piece.

I once had 3 of them. They came from the Mint housed in a white, styrofoam holder.

Looks like the mint did not sell many of them.
Better get my order in
I'll ask for the 1980 or 1981 price lock

The Mint didn't sell any of the American Arts Commemorative Gold Medals. They only made them for marketing by the U.S. Postal Service, and then only after strenuous objection from the Treasury Secretary to Congress' proposal for the series. They're still considered the red headed step-sister of the American Gold Eagle series.
