Yes, I have posted this coin before, and No I have not finished cleaning it. I was having a browse around and came across some Vandals and it struck me that there were similarities to my coin. I do have some barbarian imitations, but none have this style: Not found one wearing a helmet, but looking at the style? And this reverse (different from the coin obv above) shows strokes for legend. Any comments would be helpful.

IMO it's a barb and a very interesting looking one at that. VK would know if it's a Vandal or not.

I have emailed a customer who is very well versed with barbs and will get the picture to him for an opinion.

I am trying/struggling to make out the reverse, or at least what was intended in the reverse, the bust looks like a Constantine I helmeted bust which may have had an altar reverse VICTORIAE LAETAE PRINC PERP, but I cannot see it? Its a lovely coin...I really like the crude imitation.

You almost need a chisel to get the encrustations off, it is really hard work! I thought I would just find out it was nothing really special before I continued. It looks as though it is two victories standing on a box with possibly an alter in the middle and a series of dots above.

Neat coin. It is a 'barbarous' imitation of a Constantine I VICTORIAE LAETAE PRINC PERP reverse follis (AE3 module), unfortunately not Vandalic.
Best, John

Brilliant thanks. Just taken off a chunk and it has revealed green flaky stuff. Looking like active BD which is disappointing.

I have a couple of other barbs, they are nothing to write home about, but I love this one. Not sure about any more cleaning, it is like trying to do a jigsaw puzzle without a picture.

Yeup, Victoria laete prin blah blah. Very crude style, perhaps clashed dies. This stuff does turn up in the UK, you'd need to know its find location to know where it was made. Not got one similar from a UK tribe though.

Ben, it came in a lot of uncleaned. Huge encrustations on the reverse, and the obv was not really visible. I cleaned the obv first and it started looking nice. It has taken ages to do the reverse. I have to keep leaving it, in case I get carried away. I think I will leave it as it is now. I have taken a bit more off from the pics shown here.
