I am curious...... I have seen so many interesting and diverse coins on here in the past week and I am interested to know what the members here collect? Whether some are traders? or both? or neither, but are just interested in ancient coins..... Is there a section on the CCF where members have a profile which gives this sort of information?

TIF is correct the Introduction section is the place to check. Most people here only collect ancients, some however have interest in other areas. Years ago I collected US and world coins, I've since gotten rid of them and concentrate only on ancients. My interest up to a few months ago were Roman and Byzantine. However thanks to Anoob my interests have expanded to include, Indo-Greek, Indo-Scythians, and any of the Eastern empires.

I started with roman imperials and am still collecting them, but now looking to upgrade the rubbish with better examples, and rarer emperors of course. But am getting more fascinated by the Greeks. I like the roman provincials because they are "prettier" and I like unusual coins like "square" shapes. Bought a few Byzantian cup coins, but they are not doing much for me. And anything with an elephant :)

I started a couple years ago with Constantinopolis commems and have nearly all from each mint and officina. Meanwhile I collected a lot of various Roman Imperials, Provincials and Greek coins.
Right now my focus is on Greek portraits of the Olympians in 'budget' bronze, which I will get around to posting eventually.
It's a harder task than I thought it would be.

My first love is ancients, but I have cherry picked over the whole of numismatics (issued coins only), for nearly 40 years. Motivations are usually price vs. condition, but I am always on the lookout for anything unusual. I have a few patterns as well, and quite a few fake ancient coins, for my own education.

Very interesting...thanks very much for sharing .... You all put me to shame...., My collection has no structure whatsoever and consists of coins strewn over my dining room table, most purchased on a whim and none displayed! Most are late Roman bronzes and most are bought to sell, but a few stay with me. I Keep meaning to buy a nice display case. It sounds odd, but I get as much pleasure buying cataloguing and selling a beautiful coin as I do from keeping it..I find that by doing this more coins pass through my hands and I take a small memory and a photo of each before it leaves to go to a good home. Maybe I just collect the memories and photos, but my passion for them is enormous....maybe I need to structure my life and start a decent collection? Perhaps when I retire and by then I may know what I want in my collection.

YOC no shame! One day you will suddenly know what you want to collect. The most important thing is your passion/obsession :) Just enjoy it!
I thought of getting a frame to display some coins, but they are so small it would be difficult to view properly and then not possible to handle so for now, they are in albums.

Nothing at all wrong with collecting whatever appeals to you, no theme required!
I'm enjoying the same, but with time I'm finding some definite areas of interest. I do have two themed collections in progress but will basically buy whatever catches my eye (within financial constraints, of course).

I am in the process of building an OFEC (NOT One from Every Country) one from every century collection / culture. I imagine that out of my collection of about 2,500 pieces, I should be able to make a rather nice statement on the development of World coinage from the time of it's invention, with about 50 pieces.

I have several themes or sub-collections.
The Eastern denarii of Septimius Severus i.e. the mints we currently ascribe to Emesa, Laodicea-ad-Mare and Alexandria. I tend to specialise on the earlier issues from these mints.
Probus but with a primary focus on the mint of Lugdunum.
A wider sub-theme of miscellanious Lugdunum coins.
The eastern denarii of Hadrian - a small collection of generally unpublished coins
A variety of Greek coins that have taken my fancy over the years.
Any oddities that I spot on the way....

YOC - I'm much like you, I buy whatever I like. My collection has some minor focal points though. I also collect anything from anywhere, if I like it. I have a few set goals though.
1. In my Conder collection: To obtain a very rare 1d coin issued by my town. 3-6 in existance. To obtain a scarce 1/2d issued by my town To close the collection with a profit.
2. Ancients: Obtain an obverse die match for my first ancient coin (you'll often see posts where I've obtained other SMH campgates) Obtain an emperor rarer than 149 on the 207 list Have every emperor from the year 300 until the coins become so rare as to be inobtainable
3. US Silver: Obtain 3 silver dollars per year

Ben, nice goals there. I have to say that silver dollars look aesthetically pleasing to me and are something I wouldnt mind having a few of. I just worry that one day I may wish I had kept more coins which I sell as most are near as struck. As for SMH campgates, shame...I bought a hoard of about 3500 coins a few years back and most were campgates from that area!! could have helped you there. I also like the look of Republican denarii......oh and small silver greek units like the Boar types seen on the forum recently. So much to collect in so little time on this planet.

Quote: Is there a section on the CCF where members have a profile which gives this sort of information? You can edit your personal profile to include such things, if you wish. Click on "My CCF" up near the top of the screen, click on "Manage your Profile", enter your username and password at the prompt, then type whatever you wish in the "More About Me - Bio" section. Then, any forum member who clicks on your username can read it. Alternatively (or additionally), we do have a collection of member profiles, though it doesn't get promoted much these days. As far as I know, it still works. Click on "What Our Members Collect" in the navigation bar over on the left side of the screen, under the "Stuff for Members" category. Type in your e-mail address and whatever you wish in the "Tell us what you collect" box.
