I have spotted this coin selling....fantastic obverse, dodgy reverse (may clean), (011012) Not Allowed - Auto-Removed is poised and I have everything crossed.....Not sure about the red deposits on the reverse though, looks like someone has blasted this in the oven to get the red effect? Has anyone else seen this red deposit before, it is puzzling me.

That red deposit is all over a lot of Ptolemaic coins. No idea what it is...I suspect the bronze has a high concentration of another metal, probably tin or zinc, which gives that oxide product. I've got it on one of mine, cant see a safe way to remove it.

Ok, another form of oxide...hmmm, if I win it maybe I'll get a chance to remove the reverse deposits. Looks like (wishful thinking) it may just pick off with a scalpel? there is a bit on the obv too to the right which looks flaky....

I believe it will be impossible to remove without negatively affecting the coin. If it were a simple thing to do and would not damage the coin to remove it, it would already have been done as the coin is certainly in a preserved state already (and from appearances by a professional cleaner)... This red crud is very common on these Ptolemaic bronzes.

Thanks John, I have seen a few others now from looking at completed sales. I'd like to have it for the obverse to be honest, it probably belongs on a £200 coin, and I can see what you mean about the reverse being as good as it will get. Lets hope the price stays low...

The red deposits are going to be difficult to remove but not impossible. I've done it on one or two coins with half way descent results. They weren't expensive coins so if I messed it up it wouldn't be a great loss. If the deposits aren't too thick soaking in olive oil and some picking with a dentaltool works. You have to be very careful only to scrape the deposit and not the coin. You need to stop before the happens. Not all of the deposit will be removed but enough that the coins details shows.

Thanks, I'll see if I can win the coin and then my plan of attack is to be careful mechanical cleaning as you have recommended. I just have to win it! if not for the bust alone.....

£22.77 was cheap for that.
Red oxide and Egyptian AE's seem to go hand-in-hand.
