Thanks everyone! To answer your question: Quote:
Thanks for dropping by, SmallEagle! I do love the Liberty of 18th century gold. And that 1795; have you ever seen gold tone like that!? It isn't the gold toning, rather, the copper/silver which is alloyed with the gold (as coins are never 100% pure). Without trying to distract this thread, here's an extreme example, from my ancient collection. This coin, a gold aureus of Nero, was found in 1895 at the excavation of Pompeii after being buried under seven feet of ash from Vesuvius for over 1800 years.

SmallEagle, Not a distraction but a prelude: Gold Coins of the new United States are but a continuation of gold coins from hundreds and thousands of years ago. To be buried and unearthed at Pompeii? THAT is history! Gold coins dated during Washington's presidency? History as well.

I have no gold, so I have nothing to offer other than my admiration.

Wow Small Eagle@! Well, I don't have any US gold from this time period, but I have an 8 Escudo coin...and these circulated in the US... So for diversity sake, here she is!

Very fitting, johnny54321, as these coins co-circulated with the new US coins. More than a few of the Founding Fathers must have been anxious to 'show England' that our coins could be as good as their coins. Indeed, coins make history alive.

Wow! amazing early gold!! I can't jump in until 1882.. I love the toning, nothing beats toned gold! One of my LCS's had a early 1900's sovereign with red toning that looked like a bullseye around the obverse and a perfect deep red sunset over George and the dragon, the owner put it aside for me while I saved for 2 weeks and while he left he country on vacation... Unfortunately the shop never reopened, the owner got sick and passed away a few days after his return. Very sad, a very nice man, much of my collection came from him. I went to the shop while people were inventorying everything (I happened to be driving by and saw the doors open and cars there) and asked if I could still buy the coins (a few others as well that were set aside for me) and they gave me the phone number to the non profit agency that was handling the sales of everything... I called and left a few messages, but never heard back...

My one and only early US gold. It's an 1803/2 half eagle $5.00 in an NTC AU 55 "Cleaned Repaired Obverse" holder. The grade given probably isn't too far off and they got the cleaned part right but the repaired obverse only tells half the story. The coin was actually holed and plugged but they did a real nice job on it. The hole was in the 5th star (about 9:00 position on the obverse and in the D of United on the reverse. Sorry about the picture quality, I have a hard time getting good shots through those plastic holders.....
