Another from one of my favorite European dealers.

This is a scan, so surface judgements or considerations should probably be disregarded at this point. Obviously the rim tick on the reverse is real...

So ... that having been said ... What technical grade would you assign this coin?

It looks like it might make AU-50.

Still have to go with surface luster for a estimate so I'll guess 35 with little or no luster, a 40 with average or good luster, and a 45 with excellent luster. My guess is XF40 off these images.

The rim ding doesn't appear severe enough for a details grade but might cost it 5 points leaving it as a VF35.

My gut feeling was that it would make "40" ... and that's why I bought it. I paid 100 euros for it.

The value jumps 300 percent from VF to EF. Every specimen on ebay that's touted as EF40 ... is grossly overgraded. There's a real nice AU details specimen, but it's got serious surface issues. At first glance it looks like a proof ... but what looks "frosted" is pvc etching in my opinion. It's way up there in price, and has been on ebay for a year or more.
