I don't know about America but in Australia we would call that fine definitely not VF tho in my opinion.

You could ask him about it yourself via forum email - he's a member and regular poster here. As for me, yes, I can agree with his grade. Obverse is typical for the issue but the reverse is quite strong enough to support VF.

I agree with the grade. On the obverse, it looks like the at least half the strands of the hair to the right of the coronet are visible (IMHO the image for the obverse may be obscuring those details). The hair on the lower portion probably started off as a weak strike and with VF wear, appeared to wear down to VG. The III on the reverse has extremely defined lines - the reverse is very nice.

As a cupro-nickel the strike will often show weak areas. This must be taken into consideration. I also noted the nice vertical lines in the III.
A nice type coin.
I do not have the experience to offer a grade.
To expand a bit on CoinsKelly observation, it is the well struck portions which are to be used for grading.

I just checked the link again (at work, I have a better monitor) and was surprised to see it went for what it did. Whoever won that auction got a great deal IMHO (though I am sorry to see it go so low for the seller who I have followed on CCF).

Easy VF, especially with looking at the leaf wear and inner ribs showing along with fairly strong inner numeral lines, good bow. I agree with weak obverse strike comment.

Nicely struck.
A bit difficult to find them with all the vertical ribs on the "III" complete.
For that reason I'd give it the benefit of the doubt and go with VF.

I just noticed this post. I was the seller and I do stand by the VF grade; however, grading is subjective and it is only my opinion. When I sell raw coins, I try to post decent photos of the coin so the buyers can ultimately decide for themselves. In the end, it looks like the ebay bidders deemed this one to be AG3:)

I was just wondering since I am not familiar with grading these but did check PCGS Photograde and that is what grade it came up with. I did notice the strong III on the reverse for the low price that is why I bid on it and won. I know grading is subject that is why I like to get a variety of opinions and see that everyone agreed with your grade nolawyer. I had a 1890 G V-Nickel go for 99 cents with free shipping. I should have kept it since my 1890 in my V-Nickel is in bad shape but that's how it goes sometimes.
