What I dislike most about modern coins is the excessive number of new commemoratives: almost all mints and countries seem to be jumping on the bandwagon these days, and whilst some of the designs are attractive and innovative, to me they are just medallions unless there is a base metal / non-proof version of the coin available for face value.

Yeah. It looks as if Spink will finally split their Standard Coins of England catalogue next year (a proposal that has been around for several years now) into pre- and decimal issue volumes.

I suspect it's only like that because our RM keeps churning out new designs. If they had stuck to just issuing currency then one volume for hammered and another for milled coins (which most people assumed would be the case) would have been the logical choice.

And returning to the thread .. most modern coins are too .. neat for my taste. I prefer them a bit less regular; they have more character that way.

Though I quite like the shield design cent!

Are we never going back to the eagle reverse, or are the special designs going to go on forever?
The ATB series will end in 2021 or 2033. After that, legislation calls for the new reverse to depict Washington's crossing the Delaware.

I do not collect coins issued after 1964.
But I do enjoy looking at them.
I find myself critiquing the designs. However, I keep those opinions to myself.
What really annoys me is the mint alters the original designs. That Saca... dollar
was changed to the point where a Native American woman ended up looking European.
Oh, for the good old days!

I am with you I don't care for any modern coins at all, I do like the Sacawagea as my lone modern coin I like.

The State Quarters were hit and miss, in my opinion, but so far I have been totally blown away by the America the Beautiful designs. I keep pulling them out of circulation because they're just too beautiful to spend...

I try to stay away from anything new that is labeled "collectible". It seems that when it gets that label, the investment aspect of it is gone. The biodegradable cents are pretty disappointing for a person like me who metal detects. The designs on the new coins are OK to me. Some are better than others. If anything, it is neat to find one I haven't seen before in my change.

I'm slowly coming around to moderns.
I've always liked Ikes
Many modern Canadian cents I find in rolls are well struck and beautiful.
The ATBs are beautiful too, though it's hard to let go of copper, nickel, silver, and gold.

"Modern" means "current designs from the last decade or so".

I collect pennies and nickels from 1960 and older, dimes and quarters from 1964 and older, bicentennial quarters, all half dollars, all Ikes and Anthony dollars, and any odd denomination like Half Cents, large cents, 2 and 3 cent pieces, and 20 cent pieces (eventually).

My favorites are the ATB Quarters and Native American dollars, the rest don't do much for me.

This is where I am with moderns

cents- hate the new design
nickels- wish they would do a non Jefferson nickel- maybe a redesigned Buffalo nickel!
dimes- too boring, needs a design change
ATBs- love this set
halves- really like this design
dollars- really like the newer ones.

I'm thinking that in a couple years down the road the (america the beautiful) silver sets will produce some very nice toned coins.and the people that collect those toners will have about 5 different designs each year to choose from.could be more fun than a one a year commemorative.

I'm apathetic about moderns for the most part. I have proof sets but lack the desire to put a whole set together.

I wonder if this is how contempory collectors felt when our much beloved classic coins and Commemeratives were released? It would be interesting to find out! I love the current American quarters, I've asked my sister in the states to save some for me. She replied, she doesn't even pay attention, she's a snow bird. I have the earlier president dollars, they are interesting. I dislike the color, however, I dislike the color on our new loonie too.
