I only collect US moderns now, but only of the variety that only collectors and dealers see, i.e., the gold and platinum issues, relatively few people within the hobby have seen them. Some great designs are being generated now in this area, the reverse of the platinum eagle, some of the gold First Spouse issues, etc. The ATB Quarters are just the tip of the iceberg what the Mint artists can now do.

I like the dime design, but I think Ronald Reagan should be put on it.

"I wonder if this is how contempory collectors felt when our much beloved classic coins and Commemeratives were released? It would be interesting to find out!" The Morgan dollar was referred to as "The Buzzard Dollar". Barber dimes, quarters and halves were ridiculed when released in 1892. The obverse and reverse of the Flowing Hair Large Cent was criticized. Those are a few examples, I am sure there are more. Perhaps someone else can share other examples.

At this point of my numismatic journey, modern coins are the only ones I'm really interested in. Having started with proof sets only a couple years ago I've kept my main focus from 1970 (birth year) forward. My interest in a US Type Set is an excusable diversion.
As my collecting interest springs from my use of the coins as currency, consistency is important. Too many rotating designs dilutes the importance of each unique piece. I enjoyed the 09 Lincoln & earlier L & C dalliances with the nickel but appreciate that those designs are currently stable. Stop with the quarters already, and make George look like a proper bust again.
Keep making the 5 oz pucks though, those are cool.
I would fully support removing presidents from coinage in favor of classical / Liberty imagery. Keep the Sac $1, add a $20/$50 silver piece significantly thicker than current coins for circulation. Kill the half.
Also, more eagles!

I HATE the Jefferson obverse. Almost as ugly as the SBAs were. I liked the 3/4 profile they did on the 05s a lot more. I would rather they stayed with the old design regardless of how long it has been around. Bad change is NOT good.
The new penny reverse. Meh. Ambivalent I am. I am sure there were better ideas and a I guarantee there were far worse.
I love the quarters. While some of the designs have been awful, on the whole it has been a great run since 99.
The dime is OK. Unless there is a great ides for a new design, leave it be.
The half. I have said this before. I think a series of 4 reverses representing Jacks life, similar to what they did with the penny, would be awesome. Then either a new reverse, or change it IF and only IF the design is incredible beyond reproach. Then put it back in circulation and get rid of the penny and paper dollar.
I like the Pres dollars. Especially in proof. The Sacs are awesome, especially with the new reverses each year.
I love modern coins just as I do classics. They all have their appeal and places in history. And all are collectible.

I'm a collector, and I like collecting what's easy to collect in terms of coins. So, I like series I can make from circulation, and I have many from various countries, though it can be hard to keep them all up. I don't have much money, so I can't do really old anyway, and I have no place to put things anyway, especially expensive things.

I collect some of the modern stuff, like Lincoln cents, Jefferson nickels, Roosevelt dimes, Kennedy halves, the Presidential dollars and the State/ATB quarters (the ATB Quarters are the best thing the US Mint has done in many years, I believe, though even this program shouldn't be worked to death...once it is done, let's just end it), but overall, I absolutely love the classic designs over our coins now. I have said it before, and I will say it again, putting dead presidents on our coins smacks of imperialism. We're not ancient Rome. We need to put an image of liberty and justice and equality and brotherhood (and so on and so on) on our coins...something that doesn't look like idolatry. I would love it to pieces if we got rid of actual people on our circulating coins, and left the people to commemoratives and special issues.

Maybe one day, people will start to pull the original Jeffersons out of circulation like LWCs... probably not.

The current composition dime and quarter are ok. I stopped collecting cents in 1982, when they went to the Zincoln. I hate copper plated zinc cents with a passion. They corrode way too fast and just impede commerce. The last year of the current composition nickel is where that collection will end. My Canadian collection also ends at the dates where they switched to plated junk as well. I hear you folks on the Jefferson nickel. I thought the 2005 obverse with Buffalo reverse was awesome and should have been kept as the permanent design. But for the current obverse, just look at the initials on the upper left shoulder of Jefferson and you will then understand why it's so awful looking.

I love all coins though some much more than others. I've always tended to root for the underdog. When all my friends collected Lincolns back in the late-'50's, I collected buffalos. When the hobby went gaga over art bars, I started collecting tokens and medals. When everyone wanted high grade Morgans back in the '70's I sold mine and started collecting moderns almost exclusively.
My favorite moderns are base metal circulating issues of high denomination yet limited size. Large base metal coins get a little interest and very low denominations gets saved. Almost no one likes the quarter sized issues.
I still collect various older world coins, tokens, and medals but my favorite have always been the most out of favor. It probably always will be my favorites. I still like other attributes of collectibility as well but when something is widely hated it's hard for me to ignore.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

Yep, bugo. And we had $2.5 and $5 Indians along with Saint Gaudens $10 and $20 gold.
