In California, there is a surcharge of $10 for any tv/monitor that's 32+" and the price increase for larger tv (like $20 for 64+" or something).... There are quite a few e-Recycler/e-recycle event in my area, but I haven't found one that give you the most bang for your buck yet.

Do the monolithic and tantalum capacitors have a coating around the metal. Does anyone know how much these are worth an ounce, or how many it takes to make an ounce? I'm just a little bit curious.

For monolithic ceramic capacitors, there's a lot around the metal:

How many for an ounce...that all depends on the size of the MLCC's, some are huge, others very small. But, I'm going to venture a guess that if you manage to accumulate a pound or two (or three) of them, you could probably stand a good chance at getting an ounce. All it takes is a little extra time on the boards...and to have a good supply of them coming in.

I personally have lots of time on my hands, being on school holidays. So I take all that I can get off the circuit board, so yes I take the aluminum capacitors off. I also take off:
gold plated connectors (gold)
Tantalum Capacitors (Tantalum)
Monolithic capacitors (Palladium, Silver)
Aluminum Heat Sinks (Aluminum)
Transistors (Copper Bearing Motor)
Fuses (Brass Ends)
Relay (Copper Bearing Motor)
Motors/transformers (Copper Bearing Motor)

Red contain Gold
Blue contain Copper or place in Copper Bearing Motor
Purple contain Aluminum or place in Irony Aluminum
Black contain Brass
Green contain Tantalum
The rest of them my recycling depot accept as Steel, they don't buy circuit boards separately.

No they are not worth much. I sell them for $0.25 AUD per kg roughly 10c USD per pound

For MLCC's, it depends on the size of the mobo, but from the ones I've seen (ranging from 1995 mobo's to 2010 mobo's), they all contain a large number of them. Most are on the small size (not super small, but small).

I have seen Monolithic Ceramic Capacitors sell for around $10-15 an ounce.
I have not looked for tantalum capacitors.

I was wondering if anyone knows what this is. I got it out of the cash register. I was going to fix it, but it was completely messed up and wouldn't respond to anything, so I just scrapped it. It looks like a transformer, but I don't know for sure.
