This one is interesting. I don't buy rolls like this and here's one reason I don't trust this type of sale. Original ebay item 303267899188 was sold for $684.50 on 9/2/19, had 31 bids and now has possitive feedback.  Current ebay item 303284439136 shows the EXACT same photos for the roll. I only noticed this because I saw the old sale and new listing on the same ebay page. The seller states "THE COINS PICTURED ARE THE ONES YOU WILL RECEIVE. WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET." The reverse of the 1909-VDB cent has the same fingerprint in both listings. The listing has other details that are also incorrect. ebay allows stock photos, but only if they are identified as stock photos. If the seller is assuring that the coins purchased are the coons in the photo, and the photo is used for different listings, I believe that would violate the ebay terms of service.

The seller says that it's not stock photos, but they used the same 9 photos in both listings. What are the chances of the 1909-(?) VDB reverse and a 1890 Indian Head obverse on the ends of a second roll? On closer inspection, this seller is using the same photos for multiple listings, both sold and new. None of the listing say that they use "Stock Photos," but they do say "JUST LOOK AT THE PHOTOS" in each listing. All of these listings use the same photos of a Steel Cent reverse and a Indian Head reverse roll. You can tell by the folds and crimps on the ends. There are many more listings like these. Okay, so we all know there's no shortage of Zero Feedback Sellers trying to sell common 2000-P Sacagawea dollars as the rare Cheerios variety, but this guy claims his coin is legit because it has the verifying "marking" of a letter "E" just above the phrase "Pluribus Unum." I stand corrected. All the big bullion houses (e.g., APMEX and Liberty) are using stock photos for junk silver. Hundreds of dealers are using stock photos for common grade and date coins being sold on a "buy 1 or 100 for a fixed price" basis. Maybe this is just not being enforced if it isn't deceptive? I always thought the ban on stock photos only applied to single coin sales. Again, I learned something and I appreciate it! I'll add it to my long list of reasons why I don't do the ebay thing. |
