I paid a whole $29 (with shipping) for this due to a less than awesome fuzzy pic from Canada on the bay... I could see good detail so I took a risk. There is still luster but there are some areas of wear. That is a tiny chunk of verdigris dead center on the reverse and the dark ring is an odd toning. Whaddya say?

i dont have a grade opinion for you. even if I did - I am not an authority. I will be watching this post with interest. I have looked at many LWC grade posts, and am frequently surprised by the resopnses from the experts. more often than not my opinion is lower than a few of the known experts. thanks for posting - I will be checking back in...

I like this purchase, I'm threading the needle between XF45 and AU50 on this one. Very nice surfaces.

Oh....DO NOT DO ANYTHING TO IT! It needs no conservation of any sort IMO - not even water. It's beautiful nice and crusty like it is. That coin would slab with any of the TPGs.

I was just about to pull the trigger on some of your magic potion! Should I not worry about the verdigris in the center on the reverse? Also, would this be one consider slabbing? I've never done it before.

I've never done it before. If you decide to go after the tiny bit of verdigris with VC on the reverse center, be very, very careful and only apply one extremely tiny drop to it. It will take great skill to remove it without leaving any evidence of conservation. If you use VC and it comes off, rinse only the reverse with water when done or you'll see where the VC was used. Conservation of a coin this valuable, without leaving an evidence, can be difficult....I admit, even I struggle with these kinds of cases. I would first try to very, very lightly rub under a drop of water to see if it comes right off....it might. After the coin dries, it should look normal there. This is a tricky case. If I was keeping it, I'd leave it as is and put it into an airtite. If I was submitting it, I couldn't live with that spot of verdigris inside the slab. It'd drive me nuts so I'd have to conserve it first. If you just have to slab it and you're not fully confident in the conservation process, it's probably best left to a path of NCS then on to NGC for grading. I'd really hate to see you ruin the coin...something to think about.

Ugh, sounds pretty tricky and seeing as I have never used it before, I feel like I'm more likely to ruin it than help it. I think I'll just airtight it and get it out of my Dansco (Verdigris can spread right?) for now. The NCS and NGC route sounds interesting, I'll have to save my pennies for the time being and get it done.

The spot is too tiny to be of any consequence. I have seen way worse in slabs. This is a beautiful AU-50,,,,and I would keep it just the way it is. Nice score!!

Quote: Also, would this be one consider slabbing? Worth considering for sure. The obverse looks AU+ and the reverse looks XF+. With a bit of luck it could grade AU53 or even AU55. If you plan to keep it long term or album it then obviously keep it raw.
