Hello,

I recently purchased this 1953 D wheatie from my local shop. (it was a cheap price). It intrigued me because of the odd color without evidence of a cleaning. My pictures aren't great but it shows the color of the coin. The surfaces are pretty clean in hand (free of marks and abrasions). Any idea as to what would cause this color on a MS coin.

First off this is not MS-70 coin. I would grade this as MS-64. The colour is probably just toning, I wouldn't worry about it.

How am I unsurprised to see a scratched-up, school-project plated Cent in an SGS MS70 holder?

I suppose it's conceivable that some permutation of alloy composition could lead to the color, but whenever you see something like this it's advisable to first think that a Science class had their hands on it. And I'm seeing significant marks; this one wouldn't make MS63 from a "real" TPG. I'm not even sure it's Uncirculated.

SGS grades A LOT of coins MS70, this coin doesn't deserve the grade, especially with the dings on Lincoln's chest

Thanks for the opinions guys. I should have posted that I know SGS is garbage and that this coin was nowhere near MS-70. That being said I know that it is a MS coin and I purchased it because of the odd color? I don't know what would change the color to be silver looking.?

SsuperDdave- you think someone altered the coin? It doesn't look plated, how would they not scratch the **** out of the coin if it was cleaned somehow? It doesn't look cleaned. Could it be an error or a "school project" as you stated?

I have seen uncirculated Lincolns from the late 40s/50s with a coppery-silver tone. I have never seen it on older wheaties nor have I ever seen it on newer Memorials. I have never heard of a reasonable explanation for the silvery tone but I have to assume that it has a connection to contemporary storage conditions(mint bags, paper rolls, etc) or planchet preparation.

I have seen it on some older MS wheaties. One that comes to mind is a silver toned SVDB I saw recently (slabbed by PCGS if I remember correctly)

At least now I know there are others that have seen this type of wheatie before. I cracked it out of the crappy slab and put it in it's new 2x2 home.

When I was a kid, this is the color pennies turned when cleaned with quicksilver. I could go in mines locally and get mercury off the floor of cinnabar mines. Lake County, California.
