I buy most of my rolls from this guy- http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQfgtpZ1Q...MEFSQ3aMESOI Like I said he charges a premium, my last roll I got a 1936 BU, the mix is usually 10%-50's, 10%-40's and the rest are teens-30's with most in the 30's. I usually do the buy it now or best offer ($55-60 is what he will go for) on the 6 rolls. I have tried to get him to sell me bulk at a discount but will not go for it. I also have bought the BU tail/tail rolls and have been happy with them. I just hate paying that much for a roll of wheats. I have decided to get one more 5000 lot, now I have to do my research and pick the one that "feels" less searched. I do admit the stories for some of these lots are funny, the college kid needing money one seems popular now. I always check the feedback and sometimes wonder if some of them are planted, like one today said he found a 1955 DDO, 1931-S. Like USArmy said the time with the children is priceless, my 18 month year old even like sitting on my lap while I search for varieties. With the wheats I can let the children touch them and not worry about finger prints and marks like I do with my American Eagles. They like stacking them and putting them in the rolls, my 3 year old even turns them over so the obverse is up.

I've BEEN in the dealers place, and at the shop I worked at no we didn't search through the wheat cents we bought over the counter. We knew that the chance of finding a treasure was so low that it wasn't worth our time to do so and we didn't bother. We had better and more profitible ways to fill our time.

I've had tremendous luck finding interesting stuff at my local dealers shop each week. Don't think because they have a box full of pennies that have been searched that something may have been missed. Just yesterday in their indian head box I found an 1886 Var 2 in at least good condition. So even if they have a bunch that has been searched that doesn't mean you might not find something well worth your time and effort.

I just love those treasure hunts (not). I have tried the "unsearched" lots a couple of times without much success. My favorite was for "100 unsearced wheats" that all showed up in labeled 2x2's. I let the guy have it in my feedback and haven't seen him selling any unsearched lots lately.

Stop and THINK. If someone says this is bag, box, jar or whatever of UNSEARCHED anything, how would they know what is there unless they searched them all. THINK. If I said I have a pocket full of never looked at Nickels in my pocket, how would I know they are nickels unless I looked first. So how would anyone know the coins are all Wheat Cents unless they checked each one out first??

I am trying an experiment, I just got 5 rolls from "Mucho-cents" on ebay. Here is what I got- 1904 IH AU 09-1,10-2,12-1,13D-1,18-1,17-1,19-1,20-7,24-1,26-5,27-3,29-1,29D-2,30D-3,30-4,34-3, 35-2,36-6,36D-1,36S-1,37-5,37D-2,39-2,39S-2 the rest were 40's and 50's. I did find a couple possible DDO's. I need to look further into them to make sure they are. There were no culls, green gunk, or dates that were hard to read. I also ordered 5 rolls from cub-fan01 and will post what I get from him when I get them. I ordered both at the same time, Sunday. I am also watching an auction that is ending Saturday that I will bid on, I definitely want to go through that one, it looks very promising.

cub-fan01 disappointed me on my last 20 rolls. Not a single error so far after 8/20 rolls. :(
My only decent coin so far was a 1915-D.

They took a quick glance at the group and nothing other than wheat cents jumped up and caught their attention so they declared the lot to be wheat cents. Now if you actually check out every piece you will probably find a few memorials, maybe the occasional indianhead, a foreign coin or two and possibly some tokens. But the vast majority of them are wheat cents. (And a mix like that is often what you will find when you buy large groups.) And the seller didn't search them. (It is impossible to say what happened before the seller got them. Maybe they were gone over with a fine tooth comb and maybe some Little old lady who doesn't know anything about coin but who liked the Wheat cent saved every one she came across and then died with the estate just dumping all 150,000 of them on the seller. There is no way to know. And like I said, most dealers have beater things to do than search bags of wheat cents.

My personal favorites are the sellers in the coin magazines who advertise unsearched wheaties and then in the next line offer batches of all S mint wheaties.
Yeah, nobody sorted through those.

Twenty bucks a roll?!
14,000 / 50 coins per roll = 280 rolls. $600 / 280 rolls = $2.14 per roll.
