What is the Washington quarter going to look like after the 50 State Quarter series is complete? Is it going to go back to the original 1932-1998 design or will they update the look of coin?

I heard (maybe it was through Coin World) that the mint is seeking approval to change the eagle reverse in 2009, to a different eagle. I wish they would go back to the old Washington if they decide to keep him on the quarter, as the newer portraits look so bad with the hair carved into his head.

Sounds like George is staying on the quarter, huh? Kind of boring after what, 75 years?

If they insist on keeping GW on there, maybe they should go with the '82 commemorative obverse.

I personally like the Laura G. Fraser Washington. It looked great on the $5 gold Commemorative.

From what I've read, that issue was supposed to be used for the Quarter in 1932, but the mint felt the winning design should go to a man instead of a woman.

I don't think I'm familiar with that design, has it been used before?

I would like to see a rotation of new eagle designs on the Washington quarter starting in 2008 - maybe one per year, along with returning the obverse to a higher relief like the original design.

As far as the Fraser design, it was placed on a silver novelty piece - I've seen some at coin shows - maybe someone here has a picture of it to post.

In the Red Book "Guide Book of Washington and State Quarters" Q. David Bowers researched the controversy behind the Flanagan vs Frasier designs, and found little if any to corroborate that there was anything sinister (or sexist) behind the design decision. Great book, by the way, for anyone interested in this series.

Correction - the Fraser design is on the modern commemorative $5 gold piece (1999?) as noted above. The novelty piece is of a design by Thomas Cremona. The Fraser design is very well done - unfortunately it is currently out of my budget to acquire.

Rumor has it that the Quarter will continue with the concept of state designs. However, they will now include places like Porto Rico. After that they will add all the counties in the USA, then the large towns, large rivers, small streams, famous neighborhoods and eventually each house in the USA. The obverse will stay with Washington only he will be looking at you, full sized, looking left, with a dress suite, with a gun, on a ship, in an airplane and finally watching a TV set.

Sagan:
That picture that you posted is from 1999 (not 2009) and it is a 5 dollar piece from West Point not P or D.

Yes, I know, it the 5$ commemorative everyone is talking about in the thread as the design of the obverse they would like to see on the 2009 and beyond Washington quarter... Both rhum and tsmith mentioned they would like to see that coin, so I dug up an image.

In Europe we presume that the US mint wants to introduce the Euro...

and therefore they want to get rid of the quarters and make them coins of 20 us-cents each, because it would benefit comparing them with euro.

New range of American coins available in 2009:

1c, 5c,10c,20c,50c, 1 dollar, 2 dollars? and banknotes of 5 dollars and higher nominal values.

Maybe they will leave the one cent out and change it for 2 uscents coin? I do not know...
