oddan New Member United States 6 Posts	Posted 01/20/2014 6:04 pm Hi all,, Big time lurker but not much on posting, but have a question maybe some of you can help with. As a child my Father collected coins of all kinds. On payday every 2 weeks he came home with 2 big bank bags full of coins. It was the kids job to go through the coins and keep out the ones he told us to. Anyway after separating we were told to put them in plastic holders with one drop of oil on each side. I have obtained several of these after his death and was wondering if this oil harms the coins in any way. Some are silver,,some are clad,,most from the mid to early 70,s......Some are older nickels and mercury head dimes.. Thanks for any advise Out Door Dan Report this Post to the Staff

I've wondered how people 100-200 years ago encapsulated their coins, probably with a piece of paper, but I've heard of maybe lacquer or varnish, was it? Would oil actually preserve steel coins and prevent them from rusting out? Report this Post to the Staff

oddan New Member United States 6 Posts	Posted 01/20/2014 10:59 pm Thanks for all the replys.. I remeber exactly what the oil was,,,it was 3in 1 oil in a can can with the little red dispenser tip. All the coins still look new as they were when put in the holder..I have not taken any out yet and cleaned the oil off. I was thinking of taking one out and then put it in acetone to clean it off without rubbing on it. Just mainly to see if the oil has stained them after 45 years. Report this Post to the Staff
