The die must have been damaged and polished down so that it took off surface off the field. Reducing the letters on the outside edge of the die. Report this Post to the Staff
jay4202472000 Pillar of the Community United States 853 Posts	Posted 01/29/2014 10:02 pm Just a thought...don't they specially prepare/polish the dies & planchets when striking proof coins? If they tried to stretch the die life & polished it often wouldn't it have this effect? Maybe struck toward the end of the life of the proof die? Maybe I'll learn something from this post. But if there was the outside devices that would have worn would have been removed. They may few coins per die on the proof dies. I've heard about 3,000 coins. So if you find a doubled die, they are rare in comparison to business strike coins where 100,000 or even more can be struck from a set of dies. Report this Post to the Staff
