NOooo... not a gold one. I likely would never be able to justify owning it so I would have an "unfinished" JFK set! But... Quote: ... you may find that having is not so pleasing a thing, after all, as wanting. It is not logical, but it is often true. Leonard Nimoy as Spock

Quote: Haven't we already determined that the Sec. of the Treasury can sign off on any of this stuff any time he/she wants ? As long as the design of coin is the same. ? No he can change the design, he can't change composition. And he can only change the design once it has been in production for 25 years.

Couldn't justify a gold Kennedy at the prices sprouted about. Silver content items could be justified.
Gold coins from the mint are over priced as it is right now. Just another reason to separate more money from the collector.

I do not own any gold coins and I doubt this (potential Kennedy) will become the first.

So are we just assuming that this is going to be a standard sized Kennedy, but in gold for $1300 ? Or maybe adjusted up to 1/2oz of gold for $1300 ? I haven't read anything yet about what size they think it might be, just a survey that said "The U.S. Mint is thinking about introducing a Kennedy half dollar Gold coin in 2014." What if this Gold Coin was a 1oz coin. If Perth sold out on 50th Anniversary of Dr.Who 1oz at $2300, don't think that this coin will have too much trouble ?

Were all just assuming its a standard size. Itd have to be more than 1200 for a 1 ounce coin aside from looking funny.
The ironic part is if they did it every one would probably pass on it due to the price which of course would make it an ultra rarity and be the one that sees huge gains on the secondary market

Could they fit an ounce of gold in a blank the size of the half dollar? The St. Gaudens Double is a little larger and it only has 3/4 of an ounce.

If they made it thick enough they could, but not with the usual dimensions of the coin

A regular Kennedy is what, 12.5 grams, so that is $500 worth of gold. Does anyone really think that the mint is going to try and charge us $1100-$1300 for a $500 coin no matter how special it is ?
The first spouse coins are 1/2 oz and only cost $820. If they do a gold Kennedy, it would have to be a special size, like a medal.

Gold is nearly as twice as dense as silver. A .900 silver half is .36/oz, the gold half dollar in the correct size might weigh between .67-.72/oz accounting for the $1,200 cost at current spot with the usual $300-$350 per coin Mint markup.

I would be interested in the gold version, but doubtful I could afford it.
However, the clad and silver sets, I am all in!

I'm really excited about what the mint will do this year for its fiftieth, especially since I decided to start collecting the series just last month. I hope the series will continue for many years to come. By the way, if the mint does make a gold version with a change in size (diameter, thickness, etc.) will it still be considered as part of the series?
