Just found this thread again, for the first time in well over a year. I planned to only post my actual ugliest banknote, but I think I'll post my second ugliest banknote first... China, Japanese occupation, 1 yen (Heig#333;), ND (1938). Pick M23 (China). You can see a much less dirty and much better preserved example in the Banknote Museum; as printed, it would not have been particularly ugly. This was very much not the case for the other banknote, which should hopefully be posted shortly... (As a side note, I paid less than a dollar for this note - or for the other one, for that matter - so I think it was worth it. It's a pretty darn neat note, anyway.)

Quote: ...OK, maybe it would be a bit of a letdown. But my ugliest banknote certainly illustrates that it really helps when the banknote already was ugly when it was made... Philippines, Iloilo City, 20 pesos 1942. Emergency Circulating Note, 2nd printing. Pick S318 (Philippines). This note, unlike the other one, was extremely ugly even when it came out, as the Banknote Museum example shows; time had done it no favors, however. Weirdly, just as the previous, this note only cost me less than a dollar... I guess the sellers weren't very sure what to do with it either.
