I gotta disagree with Mr Piggy. You are not buying the case, you are buying a beautiful set of silver coins AND buying the presentation.

there is NO other government mint that offers such a regal and striking beautiful silver set like this.

I think the US Mint has hit a home run with this set and I hope they never stop doing it and dont look back, this will be the set to own for ages and ages and ages.

I think I'm late to this party so if I repeat something that's already been said I apologize. I read about this set months ago in Coin World. I don't get it. What is unique to this set that isn't in the regular old silver proof set? If nothing, is it really limited to 50,000 since you can obtain the same coins via the regular old silver proof set?

...It is limited to 50k

...there is no Proof Silver Eagle in the regular silver proof set

...the packaging does make it an attractive set.

I picked up the set and think it looks great. The packaging cost doesn't matter to me because I don't plan on reselling it.

I personally elected to not buy this set because I didn't see the value in it. I agree that the set looks really nice. But I couldn't see paying extra for coins which are not unique to this set. I certainly don't fault anyone who wants this set. Buy what you like. That's what I do. I love the silver eagle and the silver proof sets. Just not this set.

I assume everyone here knows that the 2013 set is STILL for sale at the Mint...and that NONE have been shipped yet...and it is priced at $139.95

That said in the last week there have been 4 pre-sales for this set that sold for $200 and over...

$139.95 direct from the Mint
$200 from ebay....

Hmmmmmm......

It's interesting that one of the 'sales points' on the Mint site is the fact that the set has been re-packaged. You can never disregard the way the mint packages coins. If you need an example, take a look at a proof set from the 1970's or early 80's. The coins are what they are... the packaging is absolutely wretched.

Hmmmm.... Still thinking about this. If any of the actual coins in the set had a mintage of only 50K, I'd snap this up in a heartbeat. The fact that the "set" has a mintage of only 50K doesn't really add to its value or collectibility in my opinion, however.

On the other hand, it is a beautiful set with a very nice presentation. But to pay so much extra just for the presentation? I suppose the fact that the 2012 set is selling for so much is an indication that enough people value these to make it a decent investment, but that could just be for the first year set (and even those values could fall once the novelty wears off).

Ah, what the heck. I'm in!

I reserved two a while ago. Got an email that i's still on back order. Saw that it's selling for $70 over the current US Mint price on ebay. Not sure why. Do people think not available yet means sold out?

Price trend for the 2012 set has been odd. I bought one for $195 this summer and was disappointed to see that they were only going for $200 months later. Then all of the sudden they skyrocketed at the end of the year. Going for close to $300.

The reason for the price on the 2012 going up is the low mintage for the Kennedy and Roosie. Wrapping the 50 grand from the LE set, you have under 500,000 for both coins. That makes them pretty much the key coins for the two series. That drives the set price up. And the 2013 is not going to be much different.

As for what is special about this set. No, the coins are not unique. But nowhere else are all of the annual silver coins, and ONLY the annual silver coins, offered together. This is about the set. Break it open and the value goes poof. I have seen graded individual coins labeled from this set, and I would not pay anything above their grade value ever. In my mind, this is one of the times when the packaging DOES hold value.

I just got off the phone with the mint. The rep could not give me a straight answer as to why they have been pushed back. She did say something about they waited until late Dec to start working on these and they likely are not all put together yet. But she isn't sure.
